READ pgs 361-371, John McPhee’s “The Search for Marvin Gardens.” Also, read the posted piece on metaphors below.
Discuss McPhee’s use of metaphor/symbolism/imagery, sentence fragments, subtitles, structure, and anything else you notice.
A metaphor is a comparison made without using like or as, and with the comparison is implied (implicit). A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase takes on the meaning of another word or phrase to suggest a likeness between the two.
Example:

"...the paths...of boys traveling to be men...raced for the blast furnace sands of the lake shore in July...to trees where boys might grow like sour and still-green crabapples...to peach orchard, grape arbor, watermelons lying like tortoise-shell cats slumbered by sun."
