Re: Module 1 DQ 1
Special education has always been a passion of mine. This is not just in my professional career, but also as a personal dedication due to the needs of my son. My goal is to complete a doctorate degree with an emphasis in Special Education. I am a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) with the Montebello Unified Teacher Induction Program in Montebello, California. Previously, I taught in a special education classroom for fifteen years and was then assigned to a TOSA position in the special education department for Montebello Unified. I was also an instructor at California State University, Los Angeles in the special education department of the Charter College of Education and the Los Angeles County of Education. Throughout these experiences, my passion has always focused on the needs of beginning teachers in special education. Working as a mentor with beginning special education teachers was the primary motivation to pursue a doctorate. First and second year special education teachers need to have the necessary tools to feel successful in meeting the needs of their students.
This passion will be sustainable throughout the doctorate journey because I am currently working in a position with my district's induction program. I am supporting the program with newly hired teachers, preliminary credentialed teachers, as well as those who may be credentialed, but new to the district. I am in the process of creating a special education support manual as a resource for all beginning teachers. The doctorate program will provide me with the necessary tools to shape and develop my research interests in special education and continue to contribute to this field.

Re: Module 1 DQ 1
I am still figuring out what I want to study for my dissertation. However, I believe that education allows us to now only expand our wings but to sharpen our wings as we journey through life for a better future. One of the essential reasons I chose to embark on this journey to studying a Doctorate of Education is to obtain a separate degree. My entire education consists of ministry thus far. Therefore, I am aware that having a different degree can be incredibly beneficial to having multiple career options. This is also significant because I am the first person in my family to pursue a Doctorate Degree. It is my goal to take my family into the next level that life has to offer. The World is in need of people who are genuinely educated and genuinely on Fire for God. I want to be both of these things for Society so that I may help it excel into its God-given potential before Jesus returns. I want to help Society excel because we still have a lot of work to do and there are still many people that need to hear the Gospel. Not only do the masses need to hear the Gospel but there needs to be proper education in the Word of God. My passion shall be sustained throughout my journey because I am doing this for more then just myself. This is for everyone in my family and my future in life.

When I applied to pursue a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership, I was very confident that I wanted to become a leader in the Health Care industry. My experience as a Quality Assurance nurse and staff educator have better prepared me because I have come across many opportunities for improvement that I think if addressed will lead to better patient outcomes as well as satisfaction among clinicians providing care in the home care space. I am especially interested in working on ways home care organizations can meet the challenges of emergent disease. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has made this interest even more pressing. The home care space is very challenging because of the limitations that providers are faced with. This is an area in which providers have very little control because we are talking about patient’s private residence. It is very clear to me from the challenges that have been experienced across the nation during COVID-19 pandemic response, that the home care space is not prepared to handle emergent diseases.
My only challenge now is identifying a specific topic for my research.

Many learners approach a doctoral program with great enthusiasm. However, enthusiasm and passion alone do not guarantee success. Often, learners want to begin the research process immediately without the proper skills in place to be successful. Although, passion is necessary, it is important that all learners develop a plan of action in order to be successful. All learners must make a transition from being a student completing assignments into a self-directed researcher. This requires students to be self-directed, to engage in reflective scholarly practice, and to be receptive to feedback and critique from peers and faculty.
How do these three practices support your development of a doctoral identity? What potential challenges to do you foresee with incorporating these practices into your routine? What adjustments will you need to make in order to overcome these challenges? (This response does not require research support.)

Re: Module 1 DQ 2
I am grateful for the amount of literature that GCU had us read about the overall doctoral journey. It has opened my eyes to more of what will be expected of me. I tend to believe I am fairly self-directed student; however, I believe that this degree will challenge me to be even more self-directed than I am. I also anticipate that I will need to work on analyzing empirical studies and utilizing APA grammar and formatting. I think that this will be challenging at first and potentially frustrating as I am not in the routine of reading or writing in that way right now. This will be something that I can imagine will be a continued work in progress and I am hopeful that I can utilize any feedback and critique in a positive way.
My desire is to be a lifelong learner and I know that this program will give me the skills necessary to be a lifelong learner if I follow the process and stay open minded. To overcome these challenges, I will need to stay organized, patient, and positive. I will have to embrace my mistakes along the way and not dwell on them to the point of frustration. Moving forward, I will attempt to make a weekly schedule that aligns with class assignments. I think this will provide some structure and “chunking” of assignments to reduce anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. I believe that engaging in self-care along this journey will be extremely important and will be something that I need to fit in my schedule even more moving forward.

The self-directed path to knowledge is both exciting and concerning. On the one hand, I look forward to using my creative and inquisitive nature as a strength in the research process. I have a passion for learning and innovation. On the other hand, I can foresee those same talents causing me to veer off course and become disorganized and lose purpose at times. My goal however, is to utilize strategic daily planning and preparation throughout the process to sustain progress and focus on my dissertation, while also completing necessary coursework throughout. According to Elsasser, Berman, & McClendon (2018), "While courses have assignments related to the dissertation, learners remain responsible to work on appropriate dissertation components concurrently.". I will simultaneously assume the role of a thoughtful scholar. Not one that is based in opinion or bias, but rather a reflection of thoughtful analysis of appropriate studies and data pertaining to my core focus and problem. I look forward to utilizing my peers as a source of fresh information and growth. Upholding a standard of professionalism and purpose, I must also consider constructive criticism as an appropriate means to ultimately and successfully defend my dissertation. As noted by Smith (2018), the doctoral discussion can appear “...intense and can become misconstrued.” I plan to welcome each critique with an open mind, rather than thwart new ideas from developing my thesis. Essentially, I will embrace these major facets of the doctoral journey in order to become a successful Doctoral Scholar.

This transition into doctoral studies allows us to become professional students. Throughout our time in education we are groomed and prepared to hopefully come to this moment in our lives. This is why these three things are important for us when we are becoming doctoral researchers. Everything in this process requires great discipline and that is the overall challenge. In order to be self-directed well one must be able to hold their own without someone constantly telling them what to do. For someone to be engaged in scholarly practice then they need to love what they want to study. Finally to be receptive towards feedback from both peers and faculty requires humility. If someone is going to become insecure every time they are corrected for their betterment then this is not the field for them. This level of education requires that we park our pride and work together. For myself the challenges that I feel will come in my direction are the inevitable struggle of discipline for study. This has never been my strength before and I never understood why. However, I do know that I need to be more disciplined if i am going to succeed in this area of education. Scholarly practice is not too difficult for me once I get the wheels turning and feedback is always welcomed because I know that I always could learn more. I need to continue disciplining myself through constant study and prioritizing my education.
