The medical profession presents an exciting yet challenging experience for clinicians, nurses, and physicians due to complex emerging diseases that require comprehensive redress. Hence, caregivers must stay abreast of new insights to improve the quality of patient care. For example, nurses should use ingenious approaches to resolve new and old conditions while formulating innovative initiatives to redefine the health system. According to LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2018), practitioners could easily achieve these objectives by assimilating evidence-based inferences and broadened investigations regarding the environmental, behavioral, and biological health factors into patient care. The authors explicate the relevance of research in the furtherance of the nursing profession (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2018). A complete analysis of the editorial and other scholarly articles provides succinct recommendations that caregivers could implement in their clinical practice, thereby alleviating the quality and safety of patient care.

Although 2020 started as an ordinary year characterized by boundless possibilities, a new disease (Covid-19) reshaped every aspect of humanity worldwide. According to Kennedy (2021), the United States lost over 275,000 citizens, yet most of the deaths were preventable if the nation had followed an elaborate plan designed by experts. The author illuminates the harsh reality of social inequities in the U.S. health system, such as soaring maternal mortality rates among women of color and death disparities from Covid-19 among Hispanics and black communities (Kennedy, 2021). Nurses have a sacred responsibility to address, reduce, or advocate against racism and blatant discrimination within the country's medical frontier. As a working nurse on a Medical-Surgical floor, I believe that caregivers should implement the recommendations by Kennedy (2021) instantaneously with a renewed sense of purpose to cater to all patients equally. Since health is an absolute human right guaranteed to every citizen, irrespective of race, religion, ethnicity, and background, nurses should endeavor to serve their patients equally without prejudice.

After the coronavirus was announced to be highly contagious, different health systems prepared unique countermeasures to contain the pandemic. For example, an academic medical center in Atlanta formulated an interprofessional quality improvement (QI) taskforce to improve patient and staff safety while caring for Covid-19 patients, heighten workflow efficiency, and conserve personal protective equipment (PPE) (Omess et al., 2021). As Omess et al. (2021) retort, the team invented the 'warm zone model,' allowing practitioners to share protection equipment when visiting Covid-19 patients without spreading the disease. I will request the executive leadership of our hospital to replicate this elaborate and well-documented approach to conserve PPE's, improve teamwork and workflow, and alleviate personal safety.

The medical sector has gradually introduced patients to the decision-making panel during the formulation and administration of treatment routines. According to Kelly et al. (2021), the terminally ill have often given precise instructions, such as 'do not resuscitate' (DNR) in the event of cardiopulmonary complications. However, rampant misinterpretations of these simplistic yet vague requirements have necessitated in-depth research regarding DNR orders' impact on patient mortality, intensive care admissions, quality of care, and practitioners' decision-making capabilities. While the American Nurses Association (ANA) recognizes the confusing nature of DNR orders, it urges members not to neglect patients with such instructions (Kelly et al., 2021). As a practicing nurse who attends to numerous elderly patients with DNR, I will use a multidisciplinary approach typified by defined treatment objectives that respect and reflect the family and patient wishes.

Nursing research is a crucial imperative that develops practical methods and solutions for evidence-based practice. The scholarly articles provide critical appraisals for caregivers to tackle imminent healthcare problems. Forthwith, I will encourage the hospital administration to implement the Covid-19 measures, such as the warm zone model and DNR requirements, to improve the quality and safety of care in the institution.

As Covid-19 continues to negatively impact the country despite the development of a vaccine.

The long-term effects of Covid-19 at this moment are unknown. My weekly article selection has provided some recommendations that can be implemented into my daily practice.

The article Exploring nurses’ perception about the care needs of patients with COVID-19: a qualitive study identify gaps in care provided to Covid-19 patients. The article goes on to describe various mental health issues as well as the lack of social support some patient experience. (Galehdar et al., 2020, p. 1)

After carefully reading the article, I came to the conclusion that we are solely focused on treating the physical symptoms of Covid-19. Although the physical symptoms supersede mental health because without treatment of those symptoms odds are death is imminent in some cases. As health care professionals we are taught to treat the patient as a whole and not focus specifically on one issue. The article gave insight of different patients experiences from their nurses perspective. Nurses also expressed different ways to combat the issues they were seeing.

For example, Covid-19 patients are not allowed to have any physical contact with their families while they are hospitalized. This extreme isolation while experiencing a serious illness can lead to depression. In return the depression leads to a lack of compliance because patients feel as if they are going to die anyway. Luckily with today’s technology there is a way to allow patients to see their family members without members being physically present. (Galehdar et al., 2020, p. 1)

On most hospital units there are large IPADs that can be used to allow patients to video chat with members of their family. The video call cannot replace the physical presence of a family member but for some it can lift their spirits to see a familiar face. This is especially important for my geriatric patients. The geriatric patients are not tech savvy and often feel the consequences of isolation a bit more than the younger patients. In addition to helping patients communicate with members of their family, many patients require spiritual support.

I have been working on Covid-19 units for a while now and not once have I thought to ask patients if they needed to speak with someone from the chaplain office. Now I plan to actively inquire if whether or not they want to see someone so that their spiritual needs can be met accordingly. I plan to educate patients about the availability of these services throughout their stay. (CHEN et al., 2020)

The article also pointed out the negative impact contracting Covd-19 had on patients in their previous social setting. Apparently, there is a stigma surrounding those who contract the virus. Many people are ashamed to admit to contracting the virus and feel as if its best to keep it a secret.Providing support group information to those patients who are Covid positive and their families. This information can help reduce the stigma that surrounds Covid 19 patients.Support group resources should be provided to all patients without them having to request it. I would like to gather a list of different groups and provide it to my patients during their stay.It is important for patients to use healthy coping mechanisms. Many patients are lucky to still be alive after contracting with Covid. Many patients experience life altering side effects of Covid which require them to modify their previous lifestyle. Support group provide a platform for these survivors to interact with others and find comfort.

Values always lie at the core of one’s human behavior and are usually expressed by every human in the decisions and actions that they undertake. Values also represent a person’s basic human beliefs of what is known to be good or desirable, which helps to motivate their social and professional actions. A person’s values are particularly helpful in providing ways to understand how people react to different situations. A value is a principle or standard of behavior that portrays one’s judgment of what is important in life. Ethical values offer a structure for behavior assessment and nursing values. Some of the important factors that affect values may include a person’s culture because it contains a set of values and beliefs that are obtained during socialization. Another factor that can affect one’s value is the individual’s professional experience. Because an increase in an individual’s experience among others shows a decrease in the values of equality (Chitty, 2018).

Nursing is a discipline rich in values and should not be related to only scientific knowledge and technical skills, but as a profession founded on specific human values. Nurses have for responsibility to structure their clinical function and their main job is to ensure that the patient’s care has been provided efficiently. Therefore, it is critical to identify and reflect carefully on their clinical practice and develop the ability to recognize their values. A person’s culture, education, and past experiences can have a positive or a negative effect on a nurse. Many nursing associations have beliefs that are specific to nursing. Expressing their values will help the promotion of their nursing behavior and helping them achieve better healthcare outcomes. Many nurses are presented with all sorts of problems that occur in different situations. The way a nurse handles those issues reflects on the personal values that they have. Therefore, nurses should first straighten their personal beliefs and values to the institution's understanding. Because Knowing your values helps one to understand some of the concepts that value to you (Horton, 2017). Amplification helps to know why a patient or a co-worker can affect you in a certain way. It is crucial to understand that in nursing, our conscience is vital to our values.

Nursing ethical values in patients’ care are somehow similar in a variety of cases due to the common approach of humanistic and spiritual of the nursing profession, which is taking care of a human. Therefore, the nurse should demonstrate adequate knowledge and skills regarding values and nursing discipline and regulations, It is very important because nurses are the core health care practitioner for all patients and these values may directly affect the services provided to the client. All nurses should get enough information on nursing values and ethics through workshops in order to improve the quality of the health care provided.

The Times Magazine of 20th 2020 reported that nearly 60% of the nurses are affected by professional ethics. According to most scholarly articles, nobody ever leaves personal ethics at home when entering the workplace. However, some professions, especially accounting and medicine, demand professionals to strictly follow a professional code of ethics. Knowing where to draw the lines between personal beliefs and ethical conduct is vital as a nurse practitioner. For example, nurses have personal views; these beliefs, when channeled in the right way, can create a massive difference in policy development. Despite the growing concern for more professionals to be active in the management, getting them on board is quite challenging. For example, for this to work, nurses need to have a big picture beyond the hospital bed. This paper examines how to separate personal ethics from professional ethics in nursing using the trade unions.

Nurses have a huge potential to change health policies through political action. Nurses worldwide are mandated to provide quality healthcare to their patients. However, most nurses do not know how to separate their mandate from their personal ambition outside their profession. According to Catallo et al. (2014) nurses make up the largest number of healthcare providers. There are over 3.5 million registered nurses in the USA alone, with only less than 600, 0000 nurses actively involved in trade unions. Many scholars have cited that trade unions give nurses a platform where they can express their views. For example, in Australia, nursing professional organizations like CAN and ANA represent policy issues of nurses at a national and international level. These professional bodies give nurses a voice. Additionally, the nurses are engaged in workshops, seminars, and knowledge training, which helps the nurse become active policy makes. By engaging in such programs, the nurses can know how to maintain excellent professional ethics while driving their agenda.

Example

With the widespread use of social media, there is an increasing demand for patient self-care diagnosis. However, according to many medical researchers, not many medical practitioners write about their research work on social media. The survey report indicates that the reluctance is associated with risk complication. From a professional standpoint, these practices are not allowed. However, junior medical practitioners are more sanguine about social media's efficacy and share their research work (Wolbring et al., 2012). The professional, ethical gap that exists between the younger generations is brought historical, ethical practices. While relating to such cases, a nurse, it may be challenging to draw the lines. However, the most practical approach is to join professional bodies and fight for policy issues to be changed by the policymakers. Statistical data have shown that actively involving the nurses in policy issues creates awareness and engagement. Also, from the education program's knowledge, health practitioners relate well with their code of conduct while carrying out their professional duties (Dickens, 2019). Additionally, they can take a more active role in pursuing other policy issues within the organization. For example, the CNA has an outline policy program that explores nursing professional contributions. The contributions state the staffing rules, the emergency protocols, international healthcare practices, and pharmaceutical ethical rules.
