Course: Leadership and Management in Complex Healthcare Systems
Welcome to the Clinical Practice Experience (CPE) for this course. The CPE for the Master of Science in Nursing program core courses consist of a variety of semi-structured activities. CPE provides the opportunity to integrate new knowledge into practice and to attain the identified professional competencies (AACN, 2016). By completing all the activities and evidence listed within this document, and earning a grade of “Competent,” you will earn 35 indirect CPE hours for this course.*
CPE Objective:
In this CPE you will explore the role of the nurse executive by interviewing and spending time with a nurse executive in any healthcare setting. During this time, you will identify the education, experience, and skills required to perform this role successfully. For the purpose of this CPE, a nurse executive is defined as a nurse who focuses on various aspects of healthcare administration.
In this CPE, you will experience the role of a graduate degree-prepared nurse in three phases:
· Phase 1: You will create a guide to prepare for an interview with a nurse executive.
· Phase 2: You will interview a nurse executive, evaluate your interviewing performance, and examine lessons learned during the interview.
· Phase 3: You will synthesize the interview experience through an executive summary of key points on the characteristics, competencies, primary responsibilities, education, experience, and skills required for the role of a nurse executive.
Student Instructions:
· Complete and date the required activities.
· Type in your name and date the top of this form.
· Type in the name of your faculty of record for this course (your assigned Course Instructor).
· Submit the completed CPE Record for evaluation.
PHASE 1: CREATING THE INTERVIEW GUIDE
CPE
Date Activity Completed
☐
Review all of the activity and evidence requirements for this CPE, including Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3. Break down each activity from each phase into strategic tasks and specific due dates in order to meet the activity deadlines. Create a CPE schedule table in your e-portfolio that lists your tasks, due dates, and estimated time needed to complete each activity.
☐
Identify a nurse executive (leader or manager) in a patient or population healthcare setting and schedule a time to interview this individual in person, or virtually using a free application like Skype or Zoom.
☐
Review the literature and credible internet sources for information on the role and responsibilities of a nurse executive. Create a table of the top ten sources reviewed. Provide a summary description of the information from each source.
☐
Use the information you gathered during your literature review to develop an interview guide. Your interview guide should include one ‘Grand Tour’ question and 10 additional questions related to the role and responsibilities of a nurse leader. Your ‘Grand Tour’ question should be open-ended and designed to set the tone for a conversational interview. Based on the nurse executive’s response to this question, your remaining questions may be different than those you planned to ask. Creating the guide is intended to prepare you for the interview; it should not be used during the interview as a Q&A list.
☐
Create a 3–5 minute GoReact video reflection of your CPE describing your learning experiences as you went through the process of preparing and planning for your interview. If you have trouble with the GoReact link, you can copy and paste the URL directly into your browser: https://lrps.wgu.edu/provision/173986867 Provide constructive comments to the video reflections of two (2) peers in GoReact. You will include a screenshot of the video and a brief written summary of your video as evidence.
Phase 1 CPE Evidence (Upload the following to your e-portfolio):
1. CPE schedule table of tasks and timelines developed for this CPE.
2. Sources table including sources reviewed and summary descriptions for each source.
3. Interview guide created for an interview with a nurse executive.
4. Three screenshots to document your GoReact video reflection, that includes an image of your reflection video and an image for each of your peer responses.
5. A brief, written reflection summary of your video reflection below your screenshot.
PHASE 2: CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEW
CPE
Date Activity Completed
☐
Review the CPE Schedule table created in Phase 1 to ensure you are still making progress towards meeting your timelines. Adjust the schedule table if necessary.
☐
Interview the nurse executive in person, or virtually, using a free application like Skype or Zoom. Use the interview guide you created in Phase 1. If you want to record the interview, ask for permission first. A recording may help when you are writing the interview summary. Otherwise, take notes during the interview and inform your interviewee of such.
☐
In your e-portfolio journal, write each question that you asked during the interview. Then, below each question, write a summary of your interviewee’s responses. At the end of this summary transcript, include your perceptions of the interview, discuss any challenges you faced, and describe what you might do differently to prepare and conduct interviews in the future.
☐
Ask for permission to observe your interviewee for a short period of time, as they manage daily tasks. If your interviewee is unavailable, arrange to spend some time with any nurse who has administrative responsibilities. These observation experiences can be with the same nurse or different nurses and can be completed during times that are convenient for you and the nurse(s) you observe. There are no set hours required for this activity; however, you should spend enough time to be able to describe a typical day for an administrative nurse.
☐
Create a 3–5 minute GoReact video reflection of your CPE activities describing the successes and challenges you faced while conducting your interview and what you might do differently if you had the opportunity again. If you have trouble with the GoReact link, you can copy and paste the URL directly into your browser: https://lrps.wgu.edu/provision/173986867 Discuss your impressions during the time you spent with the nurse executive. Provide constructive comments to the video reflections of two (2) peers in GoReact. You will include a screenshot of the video and a brief written summary of your video as evidence.
Phase 2 CPE Evidence (Upload the following to your e-portfolio):
1. Written interview summary or transcript of the interview you conducted with a nurse executive.
2. Written interview self-assessment summary of your interviewing performance in addition to what you might do differently next time.
3. Written observations reflection on lessons learned during your observations regarding a “typical day for an administrative nurse.”
4. Three screenshots to document your GoReact video reflection, that includes an image of your reflection video and an image for each of your peer responses.
5. A brief, written reflection summary of your video reflection below your screenshot.
PHASE 3: SYNTHESIZING THE EXPERIENCE
CPE
Date Activity Completed
☐
Review the CPE Schedule table created in Phase 1 to ensure you are still making progress towards meeting your timelines. Adjust the schedule table if necessary.
☐
Research professional organizations that offer certifications in nursing leadership roles (e.g. AONL, AACN, ANCC). Download information on test content outlines, competencies, essentials, etc. that relate to the knowledge, skills, and attributes of nursing leaders.
☐
Using the information gathered from your interview, and from reviewing professional nursing leadership organizations, synthesize this information into an executive summary of the characteristics, competencies, primary responsibilities, education, experience, and skills required for the role of a nurse executive. For organizations that provide this information in list form online (e.g. test content outlines, essentials, etc.), refer the reader to the site for information by including the link in your executive summary.
☐
Meet with the nurse executive, leader, or manager you interviewed or spent time with during ‘A Day in the Life of a Nurse Executive’ to validate your executive summary findings. Use this feedback to improve your executive summary.
☐
Create a 3–5 minute GoReact video self-assessment of your CPE activities by reflecting on how successful you were in meeting the overall objective for this CPE. If you have trouble with the GoReact link, you can copy and paste the URL directly into your browser: https://lrps.wgu.edu/provision/173986867 For this CPE culminating reflection, consider all your CPE activities in this course and discuss lessons learned, ‘ah-ha’ moments, challenges, and successes. Provide constructive comments to the video reflections of two (2) peers in GoReact.
Phase 3 CPE Evidence (Upload the following to your e-portfolio):
1. Written executive summary of key points on the characteristics, competencies, primary responsibilities, education, experience, and skills required for the role of a nurse executive. This should be no more than a two-page paper. You can create this document in a word processing software and then put it in your e-portfolio.
2. Three screenshots to document your GoReact video reflection, including an image of your reflection video and an image for each of your peer responses.
3. A brief, written reflection summary of your video reflection below your screenshot.
