Madam C.J. Walker was one of the first American Women to climb up the social ladder to becoming a millionaire through her manufacturing company. Even though she barely received formal education, Walker was able to become a prominent figure in the cosmetics industry as an entrepreneur.

Madam C.J. Walker was born in the year 1867 in Breedlove Louisiana. She was born two years after a ratification was passed with the objective of abolishing slavery in the United States. As such, Walker was the first member of her family to be born free from slavery. Despite that they were not slaves, life was not any easy considering they were languishing in poverty. When Walker was 7 years of age, she had lost both her parents and was already an orphan (Paranick, 2020). Later she moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where she lived with her elder sister and her brother in law until she secured her first job.

“No one could have foreseen Walker’s stunning success as an early 20th-century entrepreneur or her remarkable legacy in philanthropy and black activism. “I think her legacy, as well, is about pride in self as well as economic independence, which is something that she was able to establish not just for herself, but for all the women she educate through her program and became their own agent,” (George, 2019).

During the early years of Madam C.J. Walker, it was almost impossible to think that she could become successful many years later. She ended up becoming a renowned entrepreneur and a philanthropist of black activism. According to George (2019), Walker was able to gain economic independence and pride in self, something she established both for herself and for all other women whom she educated through her program.
