Sociology of Developing Nations – Soc 330
Take Home Examination - Spring 2016
Due (via BBLearn) June 9, 2016 You are given a choice of 2 movies/documentaries, of which you will choose 1 (one) to analyze “development” issues evident in the movie. A movie analysis essay is NOT a summary of the plot, or a review of the movie, or a record of your emotional reactions to the movie, or a report on random associations that were inspired by the movie. Rather, a movie analysis essay is a way for you to show me how you can apply ideas and insights from class to understand development issues in new and deeper ways. So, you need to use the ideas, terms, and theories from the textbook and lectures – not just to show that you know what they mean, but to show how they can help you understand development issues presented in the video. Ultimately, you need to discuss how knowledge about development issues in developing nations would help you interpret the thoughts, feelings, actions, strategies, interests, and relationships presented in the video. Your analysis will consist of 6 - 7 proofread, typewritten pages, and apply different concepts and theories from the readings, lectures, and class discussions. My expectation is that you apply ideas, theories, concepts, etc., from the course and relate them to real life situations as depicted in the documentary. The more theories and concepts you use, the better. Your essay need to include a country case study as well. So for example, if your movie is set in Mexico, then include an extended discussion - about 2 pages of the country (Mexico). For example, give a historical background of the country's development, policies and paths they have pursued and currently pursuing, development projects being undertaken in that country, and show how this historical context relates to the movie. In other words, you want to show that whatever is being depicted in the documentary fits into the specific country's development trajectory. If you are not sure which country to use, consult me. Indicate what is missing in the documentary, and how its arguments could be improved. For example, does it cover other vulnerable groups – women and children, aged, etc? You should incorporate at least 3-4 academic sources into your paper. Documentaries usually include varying characters, behaviors, scenes and relationships. Do not write about all of them. Choose just a few as your focus. When referring to characters in your report, please use the proper character name in the movie (e.g. “William Shakespeare”), not the actor’s name (e.g. “Joseph Fiennes”) or some descriptive shorthand (e.g. “the guy with the long neck”) To look up the proper character names, freeze-frame at the end credits and write down the names, or go to http://www.amazon.com for the film and look under “Cast list”, or go to the film’s own web site. I recommend using http: www.google.com to search the net efficiently.

Evaluation Criteria A- to A+: This paper demonstrates outstanding understanding of material, writer has gone beyond summarizing what others wrote and developed ideas. This type of paper is not just a narration of the plot of documentary or movie. Writer has analyzed the documentary using 4 to 5 concepts, theories and ideas from class readings. Also the writer integrated a country case study in the analysis. Paper was written in a coherent and clear manner. Paper includes all content asked for above, cites more than 3-4 academic references in a correct format. B to B+: This paper demonstrates a good understanding of material, writer has done well in summarizing what others wrote and pulled it together in a coherent fashion. Some narration of the plot of the movie, and engaged in some analysis of the movie but integrated little (2-3) concepts, theories and ideas from class readings. The paper also barely touches on the country case study. 2-3 academic references are cited in the correct format. C- to C+: This paper demonstrates some understanding of material, writer has done an adequate job of summarizing what others wrote. But the paper touches on only 1 to 2 core concepts, and does not include a country case study. Paper lacks coherence, cites less than 2 references, few or none are academic sources (or points are deducted due to problems). D- to D+: Final paper does not demonstrate a good understanding of material, writer has not done an adequate job of summarizing what others wrote, paper includes little content asked for above, cites less than 1 references. F: No final paper submitted by due date.
