Joseph Levine ‘Materialism and Qualia: The Explanatory Gap’ (C pp. 354-361)
David Chalmers ‘Consciousness and its Place in Nature’ (C pp. 247-272)
For the second question, use Paul Churchland’s “Eliminative Materialism and the Propositional Attitudes” use the whole 24 pages TO ANSWER QUESTION 2.
For EACH of the following questions, write a four-five page essay answering it (i.e. write 2 four-five page essays):
Explain what Joseph Levine means by the explanatory gap and the problem he claims it poses for the two forms of materialism he considers (the identity theory and functionalism). David Chalmers considers two forms of materialism that address the explanatory gap: Type A materialism and Type B materialism. Briefly describe them and say which you prefer and why.
Explain Paul Churchland’s theory of eliminative materialism. Explain why the eliminative materialist rejects dualism, the identity theory, and functionalism. Is Churchland right? Why or why not?
Format: 12 point font, double spaced, MLA format NOT APA. No title page. INCLUDE QUOTES FROM THE BOOK AND CITE PROPERLY.
