The Examiners by John Whitworth
1. In his poem, Whitworth does not state who “they” are, and who are always there. Therefore, the reader has to analyze and think on his own who the examiners can be. To tell the truth, the first thought is that “they” do not exist at all, but are only fictitious personages that exist in the paranoid mind of the writer, who believes he is watched all the time. Another idea is connected with the higher powers and religious views. In such a way, “they” can be the God, the angels and the superior creatures. Finally, the author could also mean the ancestors and all the great and unknown people who have ever lived on the Earth and whose spirits “are there”.
2. If the author meant that they are the souls and spirits of the ancestors, the thesis of the poem can be defined as follows: all people deeds will be estimated earlier or later, each step or action contributes to something more global and finally is left in history, each person has to realize it.
3. The line unifies the achievements of the centuries and unifies both of them as important in history. Bach cantatas as well as looney tunes are quite popular. Therefore, Whitworth has probably marked out not only the importance of any work and creation, but the value of music as a mean to relax and to unite people. Music is the example of something universal that is perceived by everyone.
Diving into the Wreck by Adrienne Rich
4. The thesis of the poem is that everything in this life is interconnected: past and present, people with each other. Loneliness can be not just staying alone and sad, but also a way to deeply analyze your deeds and all the life around. Finally, everything changes – be it people, things or feelings of a person.
5. The speaker is a diver, who found herself in the ocean around ship wrecks. The immersion into the water becomes full of various emotions evoked by the new world the heroine sees. The life around is described from the point of view of the lonely speaker, for whom this sea world is strange. Exploration of the ship lets the speaker find many mysterious things that reveal much about the experiences of the diver and who she is.
6. From the very beginning one can hardly get any idea why a diver can take the book of myths with. However, the author tells about it twice – in the beginning and at the end of the poem. Finally, after all adventures and experience that the ocean makes the woman feel, the motive of this book brings the readers to the idea that the book could tell much interesting, but it did not include the human experiences and feelings that the diver got while being alone with herself. The personal disasters are invisible and not recorded in the books. However, it can possibly be changed because the personal experiences can become good teachers for everyone.
Maybe Dats Your Pwoblem Too by Jim Hall
7. The mispronounced words in the poem sound like the conversational speech of the average people, who can probably have even no education. Such choice makes the emphasis on the fact that the superheroes are not so different from the average people. If they can talk in such a way they can have more in common with all other people.
8. The Spiderman seems to be tired of the constant calls from government, police and others who tell him what to do. Nothing great or wonderful happens in his life. Although every day seems to be full of adventures and heroic deeds, they still stay the dull weekdays for him. His deeds are his job, his duties that he must do. He is expected to play this role and cannot refuse from it. Therefore, he is like all the other average people. He is tired of the monotonous life with the common calls and duties, but cannot change anything because he is Spiderman.
9. The thesis of the poem is that “Nobody can buin der suits”. All people have to play their roles and do what they are expected to do. It does not matter if one is a teacher, a policeman, a doctor or a superhero, there are duties that he or she is required to do.
