In this paper, I will be discussing chapters 3 and 4. In chapter 3, “Evaluating a company’s external environment”, it speaks about how a company strategically looks for factors that will benefit them in order to be able to be successful in a different environment. It evaluates its strengths in that specific environment. In chapter 4, “Evaluating a companies resources, capabilities, and competitiveness”, it speaks about how we can evaluate how well our company is doing as opposed to our rivals and what our competitive advantage is.

Chapter 3 Evaluating a company’s external environment

LO 1: How to recognize the factors in a company’s broad macro-environment that may have strategic significance

In learning objective 1 It speaks about the six different components a company’s macro environment has and has to consider when trying to be successful in entering a new market. These include political factors, economic conditions, sociocultural forces, technological factors, and environmental factors.

Example 1: Sociocultural forces. Sociocultural forces in a macroenvironment takes into consideration societal values, attitudes, cultural influences, and lifestyles in order to appeal to people in that specific region more and impact the demand on the goods and services that they are offering. Mcdonalds can be used as an example of this. Mcdonalds has thousands of restaurants in over one hundred different countries and every country there is a new location that tweaks the menu and makes it more personal to that specific country. For example in its middle eastern locations, they offer this flatbread sandwich with anything the customer wants. Another example would be the locations in France offer macaroons as part of their menu. This type of strategy brings a local flavor and feel in different country’s.

Example 2: Legal and regulatory factors. These factors include laws that a company must follow in that specific country, laws like labor laws, and consumer laws. They are even as specific as minimum wage regulations that affect certain countries more than others. For companies who are looking for success in expanding globally countries that most of its citizens are of well economic standing are what they consider most beneficial. For example in 2012 Mcdonalds was thinking about opening more restaurants in china when a study came out that the number of people in China that earned between $17,000 and $35,000 would grow from only 6% of the population in 2010 to more than 50% of China’s populace by 2020. By 2014 they had already opened 300 new stores in China and by 2017 they opened 2000 stores. Due to the steady growth of the middle to higher class individuals in China, McDonald’s in order to appeal to their market they incorporated more high-class looking restaurants and food. In the restaurants in china, they incorporated more cultural significance like hanging lights and dragons.

Example 3: Political factors. These include tax policies, tariffs, and political policies. This is all including how much the government intervenes in the economy for example what laws it could pass for international businesses. An example of this would be Bermuda, they passed a law in 1977 called the Prohibited Restaurants Act which prohibits any franchised restaurant from opening its doors in their soil. Mcdonalds had 1 restaurant in a US naval air station but when the base closed in 1995 so had McDonald’s because they were unaware of such law that prohibited their food.

LO 2: How to use analytic tools to diagnose the competitive conditions in a company’s industry

Learning objective 2 is about how to determine if your companies rivals would be of competition or of a threat to you in your market. It also speaks about the competitive pressures that will increase rivalry between you and other sellers. The five competitive factors include Competition from rival sellers, Competition from potential new entrants, Competition from producers of substitute products, Supplier bargaining power, and Customer bargaining power.

Example 1: Competition from rival sellers. Companies have to keep in mind every possible option when it comes to who can take them off their pedestal. For example, Mcdonalds is the number 1 fast-food restaurant in the united states, they are worth 130.4 billion dollars surpassing its rival Burger King who is worth 7.1 billion. Burger kill offers healthier options for similar menu items for example a burger king double cheeseburger has fewer calories and fat than a McDonald’s double cheeseburger almost by half. However, being in the fast-food industry healthier options are not really a priority to these customers they value convenience and how fast you can get their order on their plate. Mcdonalds as well as keep up with new technological advances when it comes to marketing their product and providing the convenience they desire. They offer food delivery 24 hrs a day in most locations and free delivery in others. Mcdonalds has a partnership with door dash and uber eats, two of the top three fast-food delivery services, they can deliver practically anywhere in the world.

Example 2: Customer bargaining power. When it comes to the bargaining power of McDonald’s customers they have a very strong force. They have a low switching cost which means that it is easy for customers to change from one restaurant to the other but they still end up choosing McDonald’s this gives McDonald’s a strong force in bargaining power. Mcdonald’s also has a large number of providers which gives them the upper hand as opposed to other fast-food restaurants because more locations equal more sources of income. Lastly, there is a high availability of substitute products these include kiosks, frozen food, and outlets. This high availability of substitute products adds to the customer’s bargaining power making it a strong force.

Example 3: Competition from potential new entrants. When it comes to the competition of new entrants to McDonald’s the probability of there being a great threat is low. There is a strong force towards low switching costs. Porter’s five forces model strengthens the threat of new entrants because variable capital costs empower new businesses to enter the market. However small businesses involve low capital costs compared to corporations. It is also very expensive to become a global multibillion-dollar company. This among the fact that McDonald’s is the number one fast-food chain leads to a low threat towards Mcdonald’s.

Chapter 4 Evaluating a Company’s Resources, Capabilities, and Competitiveness

LO 1 How to take stock of how well a company’s strategy is working.

Learning objective 1 speaks about the ways firms figure out how well their company is doing by comparing prices and costs as well as evaluating how much of a threat their rivals actually are.

Example 1: How well is a firm’s present strategy working involves if the company is meeting its financial and strategic goal. Mcdonalds has approximately 38,695 restaurants. 93% of those restaurants are franchisee-owned. Their goal is to be at 95% franchisee-owned due to the fact that 82% of their revenue is generated from franchised restaurants. They have definitely made progress in this goal and are very close to reaching it. When it comes to financial goals they have definitely met them. Mcdonalds has seen nothing but an upward slope in income. In 2007 they made 2.4 billion in sales, by 2012 they 5.47 billion, and by 2019 they hit a total of 6.03 billion dollars in sales. They have exceeded their expectations.

Example 2: Are the firm’s costs and prices competitive compared to rivals. Most customers in the fast-food industry focus on the cheaper alternative and companies’ goal are to provide this alternative to customers as well as the lower cost for themselves. Mcdonalds has been rivaled by burger king for a long time. Most of their menu’s as well as their prices are very similar. However, McDonald’s holds a dollar menu that in turn attracts more customers for a quick bite to eat. They also both offer healthier alternatives like salads but McDonald’s has them at a cheaper price. This gives Mcdonald’s cost leadership over burger king because they offer the same or similar products at a lower price.

Example 3: What are the firm’s most important resources and capabilities. A firms resources and capabilities are a firm’s assets that make them competitive and gives them the ability to succeed. For example, Mcdonald’s has locations all over the world and the way they maintain those locations running is by giving the customer what they want. In every country, they incorporate food from their specific culture that provides a home feeling. In other countries, they build their McDonalds in a very fancy way and serve more gourmet foods to appeal to the customers in the area.

LO 4 How a company’s value chain activities can affect the companies cost structure and company value proposition

Learning objective 4 speaks about how firms could reduce unnecessary costs whether it is resources, contractors, or just simple productivity improvements. All of these factors if improved or done correctly could make your company more successful.

Example 1: Pressure suppliers for lower prices. Mcdonalds suppliers include Tyson Foods, Lopez Foods, 100 Circle Farms, Gaviña Gourmet Coffee, and Hildebrandt Farms. Each restaurant spends about 958 thousand and 2.2million dollars on supplies. It is a little more challenging finding firms to supply them for the most basic products like flour and eggs when there is an abundance of it everywhere. But I believe they can cut the costs slowly by demanding a cheaper price from their suppliers.

Example 2: Implement better ideas for customer service. On surveys conducted toward McDonald’s most customers don’t find employees as polite or nice. I believe that it is due to the fact that most employees work over 12-hour shifts and although they get overtime paid they are drained so they cant provide the best service. If shifts are cut to 8-hour shifts per employee more days a week then I believe it would cut the cost of overtime pay and provide better customer service to employees.

Example 3: Engage in cooperative advertising and promotions. Mcdonalds has been keeping up with all technological trends including door dash and postmates. With the rise of the interent and apps and phones mcdonalds has stopped spending money on television commercials and started investing more in youtube commercials and social media survey as well as social media commercials making them even more successful.

In conclusion a companies strategically look for factors that will benefit them in order to be able to be successful in a different environment. It evaluates its strengths in that specific environment in order to determine if they need to change some things. They also can evaluate how well their company is doing as opposed to other rivals and what their competitive advantage is. Mcdonal’s holds first place being the largest fast food restaurant in the united states and based on my research i believe they are doing very well regarding to ther companies success.
