SECTION 4 – COURE EXPECTATIONS EXPECTATIONS Online courses are not self-paced and regular participation in online courses is required and will be recorded by your instructor. Students are expected to complete all course assessments using MGA D2L and SAM and meet the due dates as provided in the Tentative Course Schedule. Online learning assumes a high level of maturity and professionalism. It is designed to make learning more convenient but no less rigorous. The lack of a formal meeting schedule in an online course can be liberating. It can also be demanding because you must determine when to make time for class. Self-discipline and good time management skills are necessary when taking an online course. Please remember that you will spend as much or more time completing an online course as you would taking it in a traditional face-to-face/classroom format. The special circumstances of taking an online course demand regular and consistent participation. Be sure to pace yourself throughout the semester making sure your responses to communications and assignments are timely. If you are not able to participate in any assigned class activities, you must contact your instructor immediately. The instructor is required to report “no-shows” or students who do not show up the first day of class. Therefore, all students enrolled in the course must verify their enrollment. This can affect financial aid and you may be dropped from the class. Your instructor will notify you as to how to verify your enrollment before the beginning of the term to ensure that you are not reported as a “no-show”. ATTENDANCE POLICY Students whose number of absences is more than twice the number of class meetings per week may be assigned a failing grade for the course. Students who have more absences than the number of class meetings per week but less than twice the number of class meetings per week, may be penalized. Students who have absences which are less than or equal to the number of class meetings per week will not be penalized.

Therefore, online students are subject to the college’s attendance policy. Please see the “Attendance Policy” in the college’s catalog. For online classes, participation much be defined in a different manner. Student attendance in online courses is defined as active participation, in the course as described in the course syllabus.

ONLINE DISCUSSIONS AND POSTINGS

Expectations for Achieving Responsible Online Discourse

One value we must share is respect for individuals - their experience and their ideas or social positions. We also share a genuine desire to learn from one another. To demonstrate these shared values, you are encouraged to consider how your tone, word choice, and content may affect other readers. Some ways people achieve responsible public electronic discourse include

7 | P a g e

ITEC 2201-02 – Business Info Apps – Dr. Impink – Fall 2019

a. calling each other by name on the screen, b. using smiley faces :) to clarify meaning if a writer's tone might be ambiguous, c. clarifying with someone courteously before "flaming" back a quick response, and d. refraining from publishing or forwarding any questionable jokes or strong language that could offend various

readers.

Guidelines for Online Discussions Not only respond to your instructor’s questions but carry on a dialogue with your classmates as well. This is a discussion, not just a question and answer session, and is one of the items that make a good online course and establishes community. If you only respond to your instructor’s question it makes the discussion more of an "exam" rather than a dialogue.

Do not get caught up in "winning" the debate. We are here to learn the material, have fun, and to discuss matters of importance with others. Read all postings from your classmates, not just those from the instructor. Sometimes future questions are based on the insights of your classmates. When you reply to a post, don't just say "I agree". Give the person or person's name you are agreeing with and be sure to put the reply in the right thread. Also, include a brief sentence or two summarizing what they said that you are agreeing with and then your views. You might also consider changing the subject line to reflect your posts. Make it easy for us to figure out who you are talking to and what you are talking about. If you express an opinion, support it with material from our readings or other sources if applicable. When you quote, summarize, or paraphrase from the text, be sure to give the page number(s) --This is important! Count on checking the class website for assignments or discussions at least twice or more per week.

END OF COURSE EVALUATIONS Student evaluations of faculty are administered online at the end of each term/session for all courses with five or more students. Students will receive an email containing a link to a survey for each course in which they are enrolled. All responses are anonymous, and completion of evaluations are voluntary. Students are responsible for reading, understanding, and adhering to all Middle Georgia State University student policies, including those linked on the Syllabus Policy page.

SECTION 5 – INSTRUCTOR-SPECIFIC POLICIES Course Requirements: Weekly Learning Modules: Assignments will be posted each week and deadlines are enforced. Absolutely NO assignments will be accepted after the deadline posted on MGA D2L. Absolutely NO assignments will be accepted thru email. “My computer doesn’t work” or “My internet is out” is not an excuse. The D2L learning modules contain PPT slides on each Concepts Chapter and links to the SAM Training for each Application Module. The Modules also contain each GRADED item for the week. Make-Up Policy: No makeup tests will be given without a “legitimate” excuse (in the instructor’s opinion), i.e. doctor’s excuse, or funeral program. If you miss an exam, you must notify the instructor by email. All make-up exams will be given at the end of the semester on a set make-up day. Only one make-up exam will be given per student. You may be required to submit documentation at the end of the semester for a make-up exam.

8 | P a g e

ITEC 2201-02 – Business Info Apps – Dr. Impink – Fall 2019

However, if the student does not have a verifiable excuse in the instructor’s opinion, 30 percent of the exam points will be deducted. The make-policy applies to all exams in the course. Graded Assignments: Concepts Exams are objective, multiple-choice tests over Chapters 1-7 in the textbook. Computer Application Exams will test you over the application competencies covered in the New Perspectives series MindTap text, SAM Projects and the SAM 2016 online trainings. Final exam will test over Windows 10, File Management, PPT, Word, Excel and computer concepts. The exam will consist primarily of exercises like the homework assigned in the course and the computer concepts chapters 1 – 7 in the book (MindTap). All exams will count 100 points. No make-ups are allowed for the Final Exam.

• All the above exams will be completed on the SAM website and will consist of multiple choice, fill-in the blank and computer training tasks. The exams will be posted for a twenty-four-hour period ending at 11:59 pm EST on the date of the exam. The exam dates are posted on D2L calendar, D2L Learning Modules, in D2L the weekly announcements and on the Syllabus.

• D2L Discussion Board Weekly Topics are listed each week in Desire to Learn (D2L). The discussion topic will cover a current event. Internet surfing/research will be required to find additional information on the discussion topic before you post. Be sure to give credit where credit is due and site your references when needed. If you do not agree with someone, respectfully state your position. Failure to meet due dates will result in a grade of 0. No late discussion or email posts accepted. Each weekly discussion is valued at 5 to 10 points.

• Graded Office 2016 Homework assignments are listed on the Tentative Course Schedule. The SAM Home Work Projects are also posted on the Calendar on MGA D2L. You will be asked by your instructor to turn in these assignments by midnight on the due date. The deadlines for homework projects and exams are posted in the Weekly Learning Modules on D2L, on the Tentative Course Schedule, and in the Instructor’s Weekly Announcements archived on MGA D2L. Windows 10/File Management assignments will be posted under the MGA D2L Assignment Course Tool which will enable you to upload the assignment. Word, PowerPoint and Excel Cases will be completed using SAM Projects. The SAM Projects may be submitted up to 3 times before the deadline and the highest grade will be posted. It is the student’s responsibility to be sure the homework problems are attached and submitted. Check to be sure your HW is posted under the SUBMITTED tab in SAM. All exams must be completed by 11:59 pm on the due date posted on the syllabus. All exams will be posted for 24 hours on Mondays except Exam 1 which is Tuesday, Sept 2, because of holiday and the Week of Finals (see Tentative Outline). All HW is also due on Mondays. E-mail submissions of any discussion post or HW Project are not acceptable.

• Back Up Plan. You MUST have a backup technology plan when taking an online class. This means, if your computer fails, you have another location, reserved, where you can go to complete your online assignments. Computers are available in the Student Success Center. These, open-use Computer Labs are on the Macon, Cochran, Dublin, Eastman, and Warner Robins campuses. Visit the following web link to view hours and more information: SSC-Student Success Center. The assignments are provided at the beginning of the semester to enable the student to plan for time constraints.

• To complete this course, the student must take all exams and the overall grade point average must exceed 70. Failure to complete ALL exams will result in a final course grade of “F” with no exceptions.
