1. When we think of the global health crisis today, the first words people would say COVID-19. COVID -19 is a tremendous global health crisis that the world is battling, but there are also others like climate change.  According to (Mazur 2020), heatwaves, storms, wildfires, and flooding affect the health of individuals.  Dr. Cheryl Holder gives examples of a patient suffering from obstructive pulmonary disease. The patient was having difficulty breathing due to the heat waves that climate change is responsible for fo (Mazur, 2020) notes that most susceptible individuals are minorities and lower-income. (Mazur, 2020) states that  a report that was published in 2009  that was conducted by  Lancet and University College London Commission  notes that” climate change “potentially the biggest global health threat in the 21st century.”

When looking at how the global health crisis can affect minorities and lower-income individuals and the importance of global health. Global health can be explained by (Global Health 2020) which notes that international health importance of helping with security, help broaden the prevention of infectious diseases globally, and help safeguard the population health.

2. I chose to discuss the Ebola disease that took place from 2014 to 2016. According to Branswell (2019), "the World Health Organization declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo a global health emergency" (para 1). The initial outbreak occured in Central Africa, quickly spreading throughout different countries. Reid (2020) states that "most people affected by the outbreak were in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia," but "there were also cases reported in Nigeria, Mali, Europe, and the U.S." Also, 28,616 were confirmed infected and 11,310 died (Reid, 2020). Ebola virus disease is classified as a severe, sometimes fatal illness that affects humans. It is often transmitted to humans from wild animals such as fruit bats and non-human primates. Along with developing vaccines, the World Health Organization has also come up with prevention and control measures for this disease while awareness or risk factors among individuals. Risk reduction messaging should focus on: "reducing the risk of wildlife-to-human transmission, reducing the risk of human-to-human transmission, and outbreak containment measures, to name a few," according to the World Health Organization (2020).

Global health is important to global security and U.S. security because of the extensive amount of international travel. Viewing diseases and viruses on a global scale, rather than by country, can be very beneficial to addressing larger scale issues. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (2014), "the United States cooperates with other countries to address priority public health issues and prepare for and respond to emerging and pandemic diseases" (para 7). Cooperation between countries provides stronger support for health around the world.

3. Global Health is important, especially with everything going on in the world. Right now, we are dealing with Covid-19, and it is causing many health issues and deaths across the world. “Global health plays an increasingly crucial role in both global security and the security of the U.S. population. As the world and its economies become increasingly globalized, including extensive international travel and commerce, it is necessary to think about health in a global context” (Office of Disease Prevention an Health Promotion, Global Health, August 18, 2020). The Covid-19 crisis is ongoing, and has been for almost all of 2020. Unfortunately, we are not seeing an end anytime soon, or at least that is the way it is starting to look. We have to wear masks anywhere we go, and certain areas are cracking down on it and making certain precautions into new laws. This disease can be spread between people who are in close contact (they say within 6 feet of another person). This can be through respiratory droplets like sneezing or coughing or even just talking. It is said that “it can lead to hospitalization and even death for young and middle-aged adults, it has caused the most severe health issues for adults over the age of 60-with particularly fatal results for those 80 years and older” (National Women’s Health Network, How Does COVID-19 Affect Different Age Groups). The U.S. Government has their own way of trying to manage the cases from spreading, such as wearing masks, gloves and sometimes even eye protection. It is also highly recommended that you stay at home and avoid going out in public for an extended period of time or even at all unless you absolutely need to.
