Subject of my paper: The U.S. Interstate Highway System
Why writing about this topic will be beneficial to me: I believe
the U.S. Interstate Highway system to be one of the most brilliant projects for
connecting people in the 20th century. As a large, successful project, I feel I
can learn a lot about what happens behind the scenes in order to get something
like this to succeed. Furthermore, it requires constant upkeep, which is not
dissimilar to modern IT projects, keeping the concepts relevant.
My thesis: The U.S. Interstate Highway System is a never-ending
project. Its roads have dramatically improved travel conditions across the
United States and enabled easier shipping and transportation, but the required
maintenance of the highways, building new highways, and the associated costs of
upkeep and construction are factors that will always be present.
Approach to the subject of my paper: My paper will demonstrate the
need for the interstate highway system and how it went from concept to relative
completion. It will include government involvement and authorization, as well
as costs and timeframe requirements. It will also cover maintenance of the
highways and the resource requirements for keeping them operational.
Intended audience: The audience is intended to be Professor Jack
Garrison, classmates of PPM 3010, and any interested parties.
Graphs or charts: Maps of the evolution of the highway system might
be included. Graphs of costs over time, if possible, might also be included.
Documentation style: APA
Types of sources I will use and why they will benefit my paper: I
will be using a collection of historical articles, scholarly articles,
information from government Web sites, relevant articles obtainable from Baker
College's eLibrary, and a map or two of the system.
