Topic: How many hours should a Nurse work in one shift?

Thesis Statement: Nurses working long day shifts are just as taxing as night shifts scheduled 3 days a week. It affects their mental health and overall well-being.

I also cited Gaines, Kathleen and her blog “The Pros and Cons to Only Working 3 days a Week” she goes into depth about her personal experiences in the health care field. Because I am currently in school to further my education, it is imperative that I look into the pros and cons of becoming a Registered Nurse. One of the argumentative topics of discussion I looked into was the fact that nurses work 3 days a week but often times work 12 hour shifts or longer. It so happens that 12-hour shifts turn into 13-14 hour shifts according to my research, which I deem unfair. The constant on-the-go mindset, the mental preparation for any scenario, the endless multi-tasking, and the lack of even a minute of personal time all take their toll.

Are 12 Hour Shifts Safe. I choose this website as an accessory to my essay because Cardillo explains about the studies that have been done over the years to support her assertions and the concerns I have about becoming a nurse. She covers studies done by the University of Maryland that concludes that the odds of making patient errors increases three-fold when nurses work 12-hour vs. 8.5-hour shifts.
