Pamela reed's self transcendence theory

Self- transcendence theory is a middle-range theory that was developed by Pamela G. Reed and focused on explaining the need for human capacity to expand personal limits. The approach emphasizes on how interpersonally, interpersonally, and transpersonal may be relevant when connecting with self, others, and nature beyond personal boundaries. In discussing this theory, I choose the article “What is Self-Transcendence? Definition and 6 Examples by Ackerman (2020). The article is significant because it not only discusses the concepts of the theory but also provide an explanation of its application, relevant examples as well as ways of achieving self-transcendence. The article begins by defining the term self-transcendence and refers to it as the realization that a person is a small part of the greater whole and then acting appropriately based on this concept. Aspects that are greater than self may include a couple of things such as general human beings, nature, divine power, and the universe, among others.

The article discusses the concept of self-transcendence based on numerous aspects such as psychology, but the most vital part to consider is the one relating to nursing. Being an essential topic in nursing, Self-transcendence is illustrated as one of the few occupants that calls for two main perspectives: one being the holistic and optimistic perspective, and the second one being the detailed- oriented perspective. Self-transcendence is desirable to both the patients and nurses because it not only acts as a platform for encouragement and inspiration for the patients to achieve the relevant wellness, but also a motivation for the nurses to act as adequate caregivers. Pamela Reed's nursing theory of self-transcendence is based on four critical paradigms. Though the article does not mention these paradigms, it is essential to discuss them when describing the importance of the theory. Considering the person paradigm, Reeds views human beings as the ones capable of developing over the lifespan through interactions with other people and the surrounding environment. The environment consists of social networks, family, community resource, and physical surroundings and often make significant contributions to the health process (PMHEALTH, 2020). Health is defined as the context of well-being, while the role of nursing is to typically assist clients in developing therapeutic and interpersonal management concepts that are ideal in enhancing their health and well-being.
