Your PIE Paragraph We are starting the work of your first paper by writing just one body paragraph about your movie poster using the PIE structure (you’ll write another one for your final draft along with a conclusion and introduction). Following the PIE structure will help you write well-developed (5-7 sentence), cohesive, organized body paragraphs that stick to a single idea. Directions: Please make sure you understand the PIE structure, restated below. Then look at my example of a PIE paragraph that analyzes the Jaws: The Revenge movie poster. Then write your own for the movie poster you will be analyzing for paper #1 (The Goonies, Parasite, or something else of your choosing). Choose just one element from that poster to examine for that paragraph—written text, image, or color—and stick to that element for the whole PIE paragraph, just as I did in my sample (I focused on imagery). You and a classmate will be reading each other’s paragraphs and offering suggestions for improvement so do your best but also know this is a rough draft! I. PIE Paragraph Structure P. Your topic sentence needs to make a POINT (aka argument or claim) that relates to your paper’s thesis (here, whether your film poster is (in)effective). I. Your paragraph then needs to provide specific INFORMATION (aka evidence or proof) from the text (a direct quotation, a paraphrase, a brief description of a scene, etc.). E. Your paragraph then needs to provide a 1-2 sentence EXPLANATION (aka interpretation or analysis) of this information to prove how it supports your point established in the topic sentence. • Repeat “I” and “E” as necessary (to create a fully developed and convincing body paragraph– usually 5-7 sentences long) • Wrap it all up with a concluding sentence that reiterates your point in the topic sentence. II. Sample PIE body paragraph The movie poster for Jaws: The Revenge captivates its audiences with promises of excitement thanks to its dynamic image that portrays a strong woman going head-to-head against a shark (POINT). According to the poster, this isn’t any old shark: it’s an aggressive one who emerges from the water, ready to attack and unafraid of any opponent below or above the ocean’s surface (INFORMATION). The image of the shark both terrorizes and thrills audiences who can’t wait to see what it is capable of (EXPLANATION). But perhaps the shark has met its match. Also included on the poster is a woman who is armed and assertively facing off with her enemy (INFORMATION). Moreover, the woman’s boat is the same “A” shape as Jaws and is headed directly into the shark’s vulnerable belly, which suggests that the two figures are worthy opponents (EXPLANATION). While typically audiences wouldn’t expect a human to outmatch a massive, vicious shark— especially the infamous Jaws— the woman’s fearlessness as shown in the poster does ignite hope in the audience, making them want to head to theaters to witness the results of the exhilarating showdown (CONCLUSION).
