Professional Goals
Nurses like any other profession do have goals. Professional goals enable one to succeed in their career and encourage you to keep chasing after your dreams. The goals also help an individual to stay focused and motivated as they progress in their career. SMART goals enable one to create a successful future and enable one to embrace new opportunities that arise. To achieve your aspirations, you need to set goals that are specific and achievable which is sometimes challenging (Witz & Annandale, 1994).
For this reason, the short-term goals will include; completing graduate school and become a nurse practitioner based in an acute care setting. However later, I would wish to transition to an office setting. My other goal is also to learn new things and gain knowledge on general nursing practices and build my clinical experience. Another professional goal is to help in supporting the needs of the community and raising awareness about the use/abuse of drugs and alcohol. This will also be emphasized by creating or coming up with a center for rehabilitation. All these goals are driven by my personal goal of helping others whenever they are in need. This is what I love doing since it brings joy to my heart and I feel satisfied and content.
My long-term goals, on the other hand, include; possibly relocating and being a practitioner in either South Carolina, or Florida. I would like to try some part time travel positions to see where I feel best suited. I would like to do this part time as I continue with my nursing practice here. I prefer doing part time because I will be able to learn and practice at the same time which I believe will have more impact (Anderson et al, 2009). My other long-term goal is to provide health care to different families. This goes beyond the conventional nursing practice; my plan is to offer utmost care of the health needs as well as the personal needs. As mentioned earlier, I will also work on building a rehabilitation center which will need contributions from various department and organizations.
Building a rehabilitation center will help those who are addicted to different drugs and alcohol reform and make their lives productive. It will also help reduce the number of addicts within the community and addicted parents will be able to better care for their children. As mentioned above, helping people who are in need is what I love doing, it gives me joy and satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment. It gives me a purpose and motivation for waking up each day and going to work where I meet people with different needs. As a nurse, our profession is basically about providing care to those with health needs. Furthering my studies will enable me to gain more knowledge in the nursing practice. Through this, I will be able to develop clinical skills that will assist me in the clinical experiences that are focused and persistent. This will help in designing and fortifying delivery skills of patient care.
My plan will begin by first joining my post-graduate school, while in school; I would still be working part-time. Through this, I will be able to create time and join other volunteering programs and activities within the community. These programs and activities will help me raise awareness about drug and alcohol use and identify the people who are addicted and need help. Through the help of community leaders and the hospital administration where I work, the creation of the rehabilitation facility will be facilitated. Though this will take time, I would start by getting to know the population within the different communities.
After my post-graduate studies, combined with the experience I would have gained over the years, I would set up a private office setting where patients can visit, and I would be able to provide them with the utmost care for both their health and personal needs. This will also give me an opportunity to build a patient network for those who need private services. I believe all this will see me achieve my dream of helping people and fulfill their needs. For this reason, I would really be living my dream which is always my joy.
