Personal Teaching Philosophy Essay

If someone asked you to explain your philosophy for teaching what would you say? How would you begin to formulate a statement that captures the essence of your belief about teaching and learning? Teacher candidates are being asked to articulate their philosophy of teaching, both for acceptance into Education programs at 4 year colleges and universities and for potential employers.

 It has been recognized by many teachers that the process of identifying a personal teaching philosophy includes continuously examining and verifying traditional teaching philosophies which can lead to progress towards positive change in their own teaching behaviors and ultimately enhance professional and personal growth. A personal teaching philosophy, then, is a statement about what you know about best practices for teaching and what you will do as a classroom teacher. Your beliefs influence your actions.

Your philosophy statement must be 3 pages, typed in size 12, Times New Roman font and double-spaced. APA formatting of this essay is expected. Please align your essay with the criteria stated in the attached rubric. For organization of your ideas, the paragraphs in your essay could be sequenced as follows:

Paragraphs 1 and 2:  Begin with a quote from your most respected educator, theorist or philosopher. Explain the quote and relate it to today’s classroom environment. Then go about explaining your overall perspective about education. Relate your perspective to the historical philosophies in education. Include the importance for students to accept and welcome diversity and develop cultural sensitivity for all to your future diverse student populations.

Paragraph 3:  Why do you want to become a teacher? What are the factors that influence your decision to pursue this career? What are characteristics that you possess that make you an optimum classroom teacher? Provide examples and descriptions.

Paragraphs 4-5:  Discuss best practices for teaching, learning and assessment. Include references to V-A-R-K, Bloom’s Taxonomy, and include the importance of assessment to ensure that teaching equals learning (Cite theorists)

Paragraphs 6-7: What are your strongest characteristics or talents as a potential educator? How will you promote active learning and motivate your future students? How will you positively manage your classroom (Cite theorists)

Paragraph 8:  Summarize your overall philosophy and relate it to your personal life. Include your perspective on diverse student populations and their families. English language learners and student who have special needs are populations that you could address. Include your perspective on how teachers can bridge the achievement gap for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. (Cite theorists)
