HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT IN A GROUP.

I recommend that you take turns, perhaps by pairs, being moderator/facilitator for your group. When you are moderator/facilitator, you would be responsible for Entries that pull together information from all group members into one blog entry, and for answering questions from group members.

STEP BY STEP:

1. GROUP MEMBER: READ chapter 4.6 – the Art of Political Leaders and Rulers. It is the framework for this essay. Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 look at the specific sections of this chapter using your artworks and research from the individual essay.

Copy the list of headings for P1 through P4 from above. Then put your notes into that list as you find information and artworks that fit that specific item.

2. GROUP MEMBER: Read the Essays of all group members found in the File Exchange area of your Group Site. As you read their essays look for the following.

a. Look at the artworks they analyze and how they connect that artwork to the theme. Questions to ask as you read:

What formal components of the work are similar/different?

Do the artworks use similar visual devices to convey (or diminish) the power of the leader?

How do the artworks relate to each other stylistically?

Does one style influence another? Make notes on your list.

b. Consider the contextual analyses of each group member and begin noting consistencies (and/or inconsistencies) reflected in each student’s writing or research sources. Again, make notes.

c. Choose 2-3 artworks that fit each one of the paragraph headings, note their titles.

3. GROUP MEMBER: Share your notes on paragraph headings and artworks with the Group through and Entry on the Group Blog.

a. Make your notes on the blog a clear list of paragraph heading and suggested artworks.

b. Remember you can attach documents to Group Blog Entries as well. Alternatively, your group may decide to share notes via the File Exchange.

IF you put an item in the File Exchange, you should put an ENTRY on the Group Blog telling everyone it is there. They do not automatically know that anything was added to the File Exchange.

4. MODERTORS/FACILITATORS: In a new entry on the GROUP BLOG, list the P1 through P4 headings, and list the titles of 2-3 artworks for each heading.

a. Determine which artworks will be used for each paragraph and write this list into a single blog entry.

b. HOW TO CHOOSE: Take the top 2-3 suggestions for each paragraph from group member individual blog entries and make the top choices the artworks to use for that paragraph.

c. This Group List becomes an outline for the Group Essay.

5. GROUP MEMBERS & MODERATORS: Who will write what? Dividing the work among group members.

a. I suggest you pair up to write the four paragraphs of the Group Essay.

b. Each group has 7-8 members and there are 4 paragraphs. If there will be only one writer, I suggest that person take the P1. However, that is up to the group.

c. I do expect you to help each other in the writing of the Collaborative part of the essay (P1 – P4 and the Bibliography and Image pages.)

d. GROUP MEMBERS may choose their partner within the group. Pairs may request a specific paragraph. Immediately notify the Moderator – through the Group Blog – that you are paired and which paragraph you would like to write. If you have not specific choice, you will be given the first available paragraph. Paragraphs are assigned on a first come first choice basis.

e. MODERATORS will compile and post the list of writer and paragraphs. If a pair has not paragraph choice, assign a paragraph that is available.

f. FIRST COME FIRST CHOICE – ALL blog Entries are date and time stamped when you submit them to the blog. In case of two pairs wanting the same paragraph, the earlier Entry gets that paragraph.

6. GROUP MEMBER PAIRS: WRITING THE PARAGRAPHS

a. Using your notes and group notes from the group blog, along with information from any of the essays provided, write your paragraph.

Each paragraph (P1 – P4) should include at least 1 in-text citation.

The source for that in-text citation MUST be cited in the Bibliography.

(Continues next page.)

b. WRITING THE PARAGRAPH:

Discuss your part of the theme by listing some basic characteristics of that kind of artwork. Use the artwork chosen by the group as examples of those characteristics.

These characteristics can refer to the meaning or themes of the works, the materials they’re made of, visual style, purpose, location, cultural/contextual significance, etc. This collaboration should culminate in the production of a paragraph of approximately 100-200 words.

7. GROUP MEMBER PAIRS – paragraph rough draft and submit to Group Blog.

a. TITLE the Entry with the number of your paragraph and your names. (Example: P0 Jane and Joan)

b. Paste or type your paragraph into the Blog Entry Message window so it is easy for everyone to see. Must include the required in-text citation(s) in the proper places in the paragraph. (Must have at least 1.)

In-text Citations should be the last name of the author OR name of source.

c. You do not need to include the pictures of artworks discussed in your rough draft paragraph.

8. ALL Group Members – editing and proofing paragraphs. Use the COMMENT key to suggest or identify corrections.

a. ALL - READ the rough draft paragraphs from all pairs.

b. SUGGEST any edits needed – conflicts of information etc. (COMMENT)

c. Identify any proofing corrections – artwork title format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization and grammar. (COMMENT)

d. WRITERS should make those corrections in the paragraph – only the writer of an Entry can Edit that entry. Use the small arrow next to title line of Entry to access the Edit window.

LAST STEPS of the Group Project:

9. I will put a WORD document in the File Exchange titled GROUP COLLABORATIVE ESSAY. Put each of the edited paragraphs into that document, in order.

a. ALL editing and proofing must be completed before this step.

b. Group Members should acknowledge this part of the assignment is complete.

c. Once completed, THIS PART of the Essay should NOT be changed in any way.

10. BIBLIOGRAPHY

a. Each pair of paragraph writers is responsible for adding the sources they used to the Bibliography. There MAY be duplicates at this stage. Page numbers are not required.

11. IMAGES – After the Bibliography, insert the images of the artworks discussed with their labels on 2-3 pages at end of the essay. Images should be in order based on the first time they are discussed in the essay.

When the Collaborative Essay is complete to this point, the Group Essay part of this assignment is done.

The Personal reflection paragraph directions are on the following page.

STEP 12 – Personal reflection paragraph.

12. INDIVIDUAL Conclusion reflecting on your understanding of this theme before and after completing the group portion of the essay. Your paragraph is the Conclusion for the Essay you will submit for this assignment. No citations required in conclusion unless introducing new information.

a. The last portion of the essay is a personal reflection that you will each write individually. You should add (insert) this paragraph, after P4 and before the Bibliography and Image pages. (Do not change any other part of the Group essay.)

b. Using the Group Essay and your ideas from your earlier research and essay reflect on (consider or discuss) the following ideas.

How does the art of political leaders and rulers address pertinent issues within the culture/community in general?

How has the study from your essay and the group essay affected your response to the art created with this theme in mind?

Do you feel this type of portrayal in art has a civic responsibility within the community?

c. Give your final thoughts about the art of political leaders and rulers.

STYLE GUIDELINES FOR WRITING THE PAPER:

· Length – 5 paragraphs, GROUP ESSAY overall 2 page minimum.

· Line Spacing – double spaced, Font Size - 11 or 12 point

· Use a HEADER for your name, title of paper, and course name/number.

NO COVER page. No borders or other decorations.

· A minimum of 3 MLA In-text citations must appear in the Group Collaborative Essay portion of the paper.

· A minimum of 4 full citations in an MLA formatted Bibliography at the end of the essay, after P5. Both citations and list should be MLA formatted. (Does not count towards the two page minimum).

A source does not have to be quoted in the essay to be in the Bibliography.

However, all sources with an in-text citation MUST be in the Bibliography.

· Image pages of each referenced artwork. (Does not count towards two page minimum).

Artworks should be in order as first discussed in the essay. Every artwork should have a label/caption. May take up to 3 pages.

Do not make each image page sized. It should be possible to get 3 artworks per page.

Your final paper should have the following structure in ONE document:

Collaborative Essay (Paragraphs 1-4)

All group members will have the same Collaborative Essay – no changes.

Personal Reflection paragraph conclusion. (P5)
