PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT (BCBS001) INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
As part of the overall coursework requirement for this subject, you are required to submit an individual assignment. Objective: To enhance your ability to relate and apply the principles and concepts of Management. Instructions 1. This individual assignment constitutes 35% of the overall assessment for this subject. Application of Concepts (Individual assignment) = 100 marks (35%) 2. FORMAT OF REPORT: • The completed assignment should be submitted in typewritten form on A4 size paper using font size 12 with one and half line spacing. • The report must not exceed 15 pages, excluding appendices, cover page and table of contents. • Please read and abide by the Policy on Plagiarism set by Temasek Polytechnic (Appendix A). • Please use Appendix B as your cover page. 3. Compulsory submission of Progress Report (Individual Assignment) is on 4 Dec 2018 (during tutorial). • Progress Report needs to include the following (see pages 8-9) o Point 1a, b, c (Introduction), o Point 2a, b, c (Planning) and o Point 3a and b (Organising) of your Individual Assignment. • Penalty of 10 marks applies for no submission of progress report. The marks will be deducted from the final assignment. 4. Deadline for submission of final assignment is 15 Jan 2019 (during tutorial). • Progress report (returned by tutor) needs to be included in the submission of the final assignment. 5. Penalty for late submission of final assignment is as follows: 1 day – 10 marks 2 days – 20 marks More than 2 days – written report will NOT be graded and may result in failing the subject. 6. There are some topics that may not have been covered by the lectures before the report submission deadline. You are expected to do research on the lecture topic(s) that have not been covered.

APPLICATION OF CONCEPTS (100 marks) 1. INTRODUCTION (24 marks) a) Provide a brief write-up and explanation of your proposed business which should include the name of business, description of your products and services, your intended location etc. (8 marks) b) Provide and explain a mission statement for your company. (6 marks) c) Identify and describe TWO General environmental dimensions that could affect your business. Provide ONE example EACH to support your answer. (10 marks)
2. PLANNING (24 marks) a) Briefly explain the SMART framework for goal setting. Set ONE business goal for your organisation using the SMART framework. (5 marks) b) Identify and describe TWO competitive forces from Porter’s Five Forces Model. Provide ONE example for EACH competitive force on your business to support your answer. (10 marks) c) Identify and describe any ONE Growth strategy that would enable your company to achieve its strategic goals in the next 3 years. Explain with TWO examples to support your answer. (9 marks)
3. ORGANISING (12 marks) a) Identify and describe ONE departmentalisation approach that you would use for your proposed business. Explain your rationale. (6 marks) b) Draw the organisation chart. (6 marks)

4. LEADING (10 marks) Identify and describe any TWO leading skills that you would like your managers to possess to grow the business. Explain your answers with relevant examples from your business. (10 marks)
5. CONTROLLING (20 marks) a) Identify and describe ONE area (scope) that you would implement controls and explain why you would choose this scope to implement controls for your business. (5 marks) b) Describe THREE control methods (timing controls) you would use in the above chosen area (scope). Give ONE example for EACH timing control. (15 marks)
6. ETHICS & SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (6 marks) Identify and describe ONE area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that you would consider. Provide ONE CSR example from your business. (6 marks)
7. FORMAT of report (4 marks) The written report should be well-organised. It should include a cover page (Appendix B), with the Policy on Plagiarism (Appendix A), content page, page numbering, headings and proper paragraphing. (4 marks)
