Digital Electronics - Lab In Quartus 2 And Assignment
Programming Logic and VHDL Design
Introduction:
Week 3 lab is on programming logic and VHDL design. Students need to install the Quartus II software to be able to design schematic/Block diagram for the logic circuits and program the VHDL code to execute digital logic.
· Download and install the Quartus II Web Edition version 9.1. Students with Window 10 should install the Quartus II Web Edition version 15.0. The software can be installed from the following website:
· Under the “Software Selector” tab at the end of the page, choose “Select by Software” and select “Quartus II Web Edition. Windows 7 or 8 users should install version 9.1 and Windows 10 users should install version 15.0 and then click “Download”.
· On the next page, under the “Individual Files” tab, choose Quartus II web Edition (Free) and uncheck the ModelSim-Altera Edition.
· Under the “Devices”, choose Cyclone IV device support and click “Download Selected Files”.
Lab Exercise:
· Read the section 4-4 from Chapter 4 in the text to understand the Quartus II software tools and navigation to run the schematic and VHDL simulations. Skip the part “Programming the FPGAs using the Altera Development and Education Boards” in section 4-4 and section 4-5.
· Understand how to create and simulate a Block Diagram/Schematic file (.bdf file), VHDL file (.vhd file) and verify the output using the vector waveform file (.vwf file).
· Review the following examples from the text: Example 4-2, Example 4-3 (skip (b)) and Example 4-4 (skip (b)).
· Complete the problem C4-1 a, b, and c on page 154 of the text and turn in the required files.
· Submit prob_c4_1.bdf, prob_c4_1.vwf and the truth table for the Boolean expression.
· Compile the report using the lab report template and save the screen captures from the .bdf file and results of the .vwf file.
· Save the report as Lab3_GID, with the GID substituted with your GID and upload.
