“…academic writers are accustomed to extensive reading that prepares them to examine an issue, knowledgeably, from many different perspectives, and to make interesting intellectual use of what they discover in their research” (2)

“Writing is a process of balancing goals with the history of similar kinds of communication…” (2)
Prompt: Assess these statements and consider the value these habits have for other areas of social communication, or is their value limited to academics? Provide your response. Include an explanation. Follow the explanation with an example to support/ clarify your position.
Greene & Lidinsky describe “habits of mind” as critical thinking, important to today’s communication practices. They further state: “We have a responsibility to test the claims of both science and advertising in order to decide what to believe and act upon…Testing the truth of claims–learning to consider information carefully and critically and to weigh competing points of view before making judgments–gives us power over our own lives” (3).

Greene & Lidinsky use the term “Analytical/Skeptical” mind in the discussion of analysis. They describe analysis as “an unwillingness to settle for obvious answers in the quest to understand why things are the way they are and how they might be different” (4)
This is a very interesting read. Has anyone ever considered the alternative options? I mean something other than this .Would it give the same outcome as this ?
