Compose 250-300-word essay that describes the way the film or novel begins: describe a setting, the tone (camera angles or music), and any characters and their actions as the story begins. What important issue(s) or themes will develop as the story unfolds? How can you tell? Identify a particular moment or a particular chapter in the opening and analyze what's being set up for us. How does it begin? What does it promise to be about? How do you know? Don't go too far in -- the primary conflict scene that usually follows the exposition identifies the protagonist and antagonist of the story and sets things into motion.

Your task is to describe one of the scenes in the exposition or the conflict scene in vivid detail. The purpose of this post is to demonstrate your grasp of the "exposition" point in the plot -- where it is, what's in it, and why. What does the exposition in this particular film or novel accomplish? Why does it matter?

This story setting is placed in Oklahoma City in the year 2045. It starts out with a macro view of earths overall condition. Wade, the main character, picks up that his family has painted a positive outlook in the world only to discover that humans have trashed their environment. Climate change is leading to sea level rise, ecosystems dying off, resources being scarce, famine and homelessness. In Wades micro setting, he lives with his Aunt and two other families in a double-wide trailer affixed to the top of a stack of 20 or so other trailers. This stack is surrounded with other various sized stacks interconnected by pipes, support systems and bridges and are powered by old solar panels. At the ground level between these stacks lay mounds of abandoned cars and rubbish and one of these mounds is where Wade discovered a hidden van that he uses for his hide out for privacy. While in his hide out, he accesses another setting within the virtual world of OASIS. OASIS, a virtual world that allows everyone to escape their reality and explore their world or others, engage is schooling and interact with other people, or their avatars.

The main character, Wade Watts, paints a better real world self-description in the second chapter. Since he spends most of his time using OASIS, he lacks social skills which have made him rather awkward and shy and leads to low self-esteem. He is overweight, which he blames on a diet of “sugar and starch laden” government food, suffers from teenage acne, and is socially conscious of his wardrobe obtained from second hand stores. Despite his low self-image, he designs his avatar, Percival, for the virtual world into a positive one by making himself thinner, taller, muscular and without the acne.

A good vs evil theme builds on itself after the prologue where the creator of OASIS dies and challenges the world to an adventure to claim his wealth and ownership over OASIS. OASIS was designed to be free for all to use, however, with the owner’s death and his challenge to the world, a company known IOI is racing all others to capitalize on this moment. IOI has created a team known as “Sixers,” who are all in search of the Easter egg within the virtual world to gain control of OASIS. Once they gain control, they will start charging monthly fees, and insert pesky advertisement everywhere all in attempt to steal away the public’s “escape” from reality and serve Earths wealthy elite.
