Script Analysis #4: Key Moments
PLEASE NOTE:
The questions on today’s slides will be helpful when you do your script analysis paper.
Unlike previous classes like this one, the activity we’re doing at the end of class today does not resemble the paper.
“The stage world never obeys the same rules as ours, because in its world, nothing else is possible besides what is there: no one else lives there; no other geography is available; no alternative actions can be taken.”
Think of the physical world of the play as a “small planet.”
How would we describe the world of Planet Hunger Games?
How would we describe the world of Planet Harry Potter?
How would you describe the world of your particular major?
SPACE
What is space like on this planet? Interior or exterior, built or natural? Is space here confined or wide open? Do you see a long passage with many “stations”? Do you see a landscape of valleys and mountains? Sea and land? Are we on an island? In a cave? In a desert or jungle? On a country road?
SPACE
List all the spaces we inhabit within the play - spaces we actually go to, not spaces that get mentioned.
How would you describe each space? Is there any attempt to represent a real geographical place?
What trends do you see?
SPACE
What spaces do we NEVER visit? What are the “hidden worlds”? (Sometimes this can be helpful in spotting trends.)
Now how does this help you as a scenic designer?
What is SPACE like on…
Planet Passing Strange? Planet Sensitive Guys? Planet Doll’s House?
TIME
How does time behave on this planet? Does “time stand still”? Is time frantic and staccato on this planet? Is it leisurely easy-going time? How is time marked on this planet? By clock? By the sun? By sounds? What kind of time are we in? Cyclical? Eternal? Linear? What kind of line? One day? One lifetime?
TIME
Create a timeline for the play. Include months, dates, and years. How much time really elapses from start to finish? Is it spread out or very compressed?
What direction does the play move?
Are the scenes short or long?
What is TIME like on…
Planet Passing Strange? Planet Sensitive Guys? Planet Doll’s House?
KEY MOMENTS
Think of it as a “moment chain.”
What are the 20, 10, or 5 most important moments of the play?
If someone read your list, they should still be able to get most of the original story.
In small groups, create a soundtrack for a new production of Ready Steady Yeti Go.
Identify a few key moments from the play, and choose songs to underscore those moments.
Come up with at least 6 moments and 6 songs to go with them. 1 of your songs must be instrumental.
