Barangaroo will set the benchmark for sustainability, helping the world by changing the way people live, work and play.Barangaroo’s goal is to be the first precinct of its size in the world to be climate positive. This means generating more renewable energy than we use, recycling and exporting more water than we use and reusing, and reducing and recycling more waste from the city than we generate.Designed to be Australia’s first carbon neutral community, Barangaroo will include cutting edge infrastructure such as harbour water cooling, co-generation and renewable energy generation.Carbon NeutralSmart design in the three commercial towers known asInternational Towers Sydney will help achieve a carbon neutral precinct. The towers’ designs are oriented to reduce heat gain on the western façade and will include vertical shading panels which respond to the sun’s path, providing superior shading and reducing cooling needs.Precinct infrastructure will also deliver even greater energy efficiency with more effective air conditioning through a chilled water and harbour cooling system.Water positiveBarangaroo will be capable of exporting more recycled water to surrounding areas than the amount of drinkable water consumed there. A water wise precinct will include smart design with water efficient appliances, as well as using captured rainwater and treated water for toilet flushing, irrigation, wash down and fire suppression. Zero waste Barangaroo will use an innovative, precinct-wide waste minimisation, collection and recycling process that will result in over 80% of operational waste being diverted from landfill. The goal is to achieve a net zero waste outcome for the precinct.Community wellbeingBarangaroo will enhance the wellbeing of the community through a range of initiatives.There will be affordable housing for key workers as well as green skilling and local employment opportunities. One in five construction workers will be an apprentice or trainee.Strong public transport links will provide sustainable travel options such as only 4% car use on site, walking and cycling networks through the precinct and electric car power stations in car parks. These vital connections will ensure up to 96% of people coming to Barangaroo will use public transport, walk or cycle. Just over 50% of Barangaroo will be dedicated public space, including a 2.2 kilometre foreshore walk and the vibrant, natural Headland Park.

These include:>Planting 100% native plants in the Headland Park. >Ensuring retailers and suppliers avoid packaging, reduce waste and offer healthy food choices from locally and sustainably produced food. >Generating new renewable energy off site – including a solar farm in regional NSW, big enough to generate the amount of electricity required to power approximately 5,000 homes. >Encouraging new enterprises with affordable retail and office space. >Providing and promoting access to and facilities for walking, cycling and passive and active recreation through design for active living and healthy lifestyles.Key features >Over one year Barangaroo South will be able to contribute the equivalent of about 60 Olympic swimming pools of recycled water to the rest of CBD.>In total there will be an estimated 6,000sqm of solar panels, generating over 1000MWh of energy each year, enough to power 137 homes.>During construction, 97% of waste will be diverted from landfill.>Soil will be manufactured on-site from sandstone and recycled waste.>Recycled water will be used for flushing toilets, irrigation and fire sprinklers.>Tenants will be required to save energy by adjusting air-conditioning to just two degrees warmer in summer and two degrees cooler in winter. >There will be more than 1,000 bike spaces for employees.“Barangaroo is working with sustainability leaders from around the world to help reach our goals.”Clinton Climate InitiativeBarangaroo is one of just 17 precincts worldwide that has been selected to participate in the Climate Positive Development Program. Barangaroo’s selection is based on world leading sustainability targets that apply across the precinct.
