Detailed study of principles of chemistry for science majors and students in pre-professional curricula.

Official Course Prerequisites

A grade of "C" or better in [(CHM130 and CHM130LL), or CHM130AA, or one year of high school chemistry taken within the last five years] and (MAT151 or higher level mathematics course). Completion of all prerequisites within the last two years is recommended.

Course Note

Student may receive credit for only one of the following: CHM150 and CHM151LL, or CHM151 and CHM151LL, or CHM150AA, or CHM151AA.

1. Define "chemistry" and describe its main branches. 2. Use the factor-label (dimensional analysis) method in solving chemistry-related problems. 3. Use metric and SI systems of units. 4. Define the relationships between matter and energy.

Course Requirements

1. You must complete the 12 lesson assignments in the course. 2. Examinations: There are two online tests, plus one Midterm Exam and one Final Exam. The Midterm and Final Exams are both

proctored exams. Students living in Maricopa County must take these exams at a Rio Salado Testing Site. Students living outside of Maricopa County must arrange a proctor through Rio Salado’s Testing office. Plan well ahead of time.

3. Note: You must average 60% on the combined scores of your midterm and final exams in order to pass the course. 4. Remember that this is a three credit-hour class. As such, you will need to dedicate significant time to this course. Plan to

spend at least three hours on course content and at least six hours on homework for a total of at least nine hours each week. Be prepared to double your weekly class and study time if you choose an accelerated calendar.

Grading Procedure and Scale

Grading procedures are administered equally to all students in the course. Do not expect to receive a grade higher than that earned by your scored work. There will be no point adjustments made for such things as class participation or other subjective factors. There is no extra credit offered in this course.

Note to students: You must earn a minimum of 60% average on the Midterm and Final Exams in order to pass the course.

Grading Procedure

l Two Take-Home (online) Tests = 600 total points

Take-Home Test 1: 300 points Take-Home Test 2: 300 points (Take Home Tests include multiple-choice questions and a short essay.)

l One Midterm and One Final Exam = 1800 total points

Midterm Exam: 900 points Final Exam: 900 points (The Midterm and Final Exams include multiple-choice questions and a short essay.)

l Lesson Assignments = 1200 total points

12 Homework Assignments: 100 points each (submitted via www.masteringchemistry.com)

Letter grades for assignments, examinations, and the course will be determined by the following scale:

Describe the properties of metallic and nonmetallic elements. 8. Write formulas for and give names of simple inorganic compounds. 9. Classify a property or change as physical or chemical.

10. Complete and balance chemical equations. 11. Write a net ionic equation from a given reaction. 12. Determine the empirical and molecular formula from percentage composition or mass data. 13. Perform calculations using the mole concept of mass and number. 14. Solve problems involving the ideal gas laws. 15. Solve problems involving energy changes that result from physical state changes and from chemical reactions. 16. Apply Hess's law to given set of equations. 17. Calculate heats of reactions from calorimeter data and/or bond energies. 18. Solve stoichiometry problems, including problems involving solutions and heats of reactions. 19. Deduce the electronic structure of atoms and show the relationship between electronic structure and the chemical

properties of atoms. 20. Use the periodic table to predict the properties of elements and compounds. 21. Identify substances as electrolytes or nonelectrolytes. 22. Describe the properties of ionic and covalent compounds. 23. Write the electron dot structure for an atom, ion, ionic formula, or a covalently bonded specie. 24. Describe covalent chemical bonding. 25. Use the concepts of electonegativity and bond polarity in conjunction with VSEPR theory to predict the shapes and polarities

of simple ions and molecules. 26. Classify intermolecular forces in a given substance. 27. Classify a crystal as molecular, ionic, covalent, or metallic. 28. Describe the properties of solutions.

3240 – 3600 points = A (90% - 100%)

The Take Home Tests will be completed via a link in the appropriate lesson.

Final Grade Options

l Letter grade (A, B, C, D, F) — awarded if the student completes all work, including the final exam.

l Incomplete - Students who are doing acceptable work may request an incomplete grade “I” if they are unable to complete the course requirements by the end of the term because of illness or other extenuating circumstances. If the request is approved by the instructor, he or she shall define, in a written/electronic contract, how the course will be completed. Please Note: Instructors are not obligated to give incompletes.

l Withdrawal-Students may submit a withdrawal request on or prior to the “Last Date to Withdraw” indicated in their RioLearn Gradebook.

Students should not contact their instructor to request a withdrawal. A student wishing to withdraw from a class within the stated timeline must do so by visiting my.maricopa.edu. In extreme circumstances, students do have the option of requesting a complete withdrawal from the college by providing Student Enrollment Services with appropriate documentation.

Exams

There may be required in-person or on-line/take-home exam(s) for this course. Please review the "Grading Procedure and Scale" portion of your syllabus for details. Your course materials may give specific information about these exams and make suggestions for test preparation.

In-person exams are given at various locations throughout the valley for students who live in Maricopa County.

You may view information on Testing Sites to select the testing location and hours of operation that fit your needs. You may also

Students who reside outside Maricopa County or who are registered with Disability Resources and Services can request a proctor.

Please contact the Student Services testing center at (480) 517-8560 . Requests can be made via the Internet by completing

and submitting the proctor request form to Student Services.

In-Person Examination Procedures

1. There is no appointment necessary to take your exam. Exams can be taken during normal hours of operation at any Rio Salado College testing site.

2. You must complete the final exam by your course end date. 3. You may take your exam(s) before your course end date if and only if you have received all of your graded assignments.

Syllabus Acknowledgement

Special Note: The online syllabus acknowledgement found under the Lesson Requirements on the Lesson 1 Preview Page should be completed prior to accessing any assignments for the class. If the online syllabus acknowledgement is not completed, students will be automatically purged from the course. Additionally, if a student is purged from class and has been provided permission by the department to be reinstated, the syllabus acknowledgement must be completed upon reinstatement into the class; even if it had been previously completed.

Late or Missing Assignments

Assignments that have due dates are due on time according to the due dates in your gradebook. If you need to request an extension for an assignment, a request must be made to your instructor via Riolearn at least one week prior to the due date. You can request a due date change using the “Modify Due Dates” feature from the “Due Dates” tab in the Gradebook. Late points may be applied at the instructor's discretion.

Course Completion Policy

A student who registers for a Distance Learning course is assigned a "start date" and an "end date." It is the student's responsibility to note due dates for assignments and to keep up with the course work.
