Module 7 Assignment CS101 Summer 2018

COMPUTER LITERACY MINI RESEARCH PAPER

Submit a five hundred (500)-word paper on a computer related topic by Thursday January 10th, 2019. Do not exceed 550 words or 2 pages. Some topic suggestions follow. Obtain the instructor’s approval of other computer related topics.

Artificial Intelligence

Computers in a Particular Career

Motherboard Contents

Charles Babbage

Computer Viruses

Network Configurations

Cim (Computer Integrated Manufacturing)

Fifth-Generation Computers

Optical Fiber

Computer Crimes

John V. Atanasoff

Other Computer Related Topic

Computer Ethics

Type the paper using Microsoft Word and demonstrate the skills listed in the grading section below. Use double spacing, a 12 point font size, and first line indents of 0.3.” Do not place blank lines between paragraphs. Save as Your Last Name Research Paper. Submit the file using the SAM Dropbox.

Paper requirements will vary among instructors, so always inquire. My requirements are to include an APA style title page, which includes a page number. Place the title page, document, and references page in one file. The references page must include at least three references (one book, one periodical, and one Internet) in APA format using .3” first line and hanging indents. Use APA parenthetical documentation within the paper to cite words that are quotations or paraphrases, or express an idea gleaned from an author. See the writing lab for assistance. Use APA for topics in such fields as computer science, psychology, and medicine because the information in these fields changes rapidly making dates more important to the reader; therefore, APA places dates in the parenthetical documentations and also locates dates earlier in the citations on the references page. In contrast, MLA is used for topics in more static fields such as literature and history, and requires a works cited page rather than a references page. Read and abide by ECC’s plagiarism policy .

In the first paragraph, create a clear thesis statement, that is, a claim or an opinion. In the next paragraphs, relate the main points and details, which prove the thesis. In the final paragraph, write a conclusion related to the thesis without adding new material but avoiding redundancies (sum reason thesis was proved and by what). Keep control of your paper; do not allow quotations to take control. To keep paper readable, pretend that the reader is not a good reader. Write as if the reader is 12 years old, maybe even 10 years old. Use simple sentences: subject-verb-object. Complicated sentences can confuse the reader causing he/she to read and reread many times. The writer has the responsibility of clearly explaining the material. Always consider the audience’s background. Use no more than four (4) quotes per page or one quote per paragraph. Avoid encyclopedias because they are someone else’s research.

GRADING:

To create an APA style title page (12 point font size), start with the 6 blank lines as described in the figure below and continue. To add page numbering, see the next paragraph. Press Enter and Ctrl+Enter to insert a hard page break. Visit these links for more details about APA and MLA: http://www.nutsandboltsguide.com/apa.html and http://www.nutsandboltsguide.com/mla.html

APA Title Page

APA First Page

Artificial Intelligence (Short Title) 1

(about 6 blank lines, double-spaced)

(entire title page, paper, & references page are double-spaced)

(another version of an APA title page places the title about half way down the page and subsequent data—see below—on separate lines without blank lines between. Both versions center all but line with page number.)

Artificial Intelligence:

(above is Full Title or just main title: if using a subtitle)

Past, Present and Future

(above is optional subtitle or leave line blank)

(about 4 or 5 blank lines)

Student’s Name

(about 7 blank lines)

Computer Literacy 101, Section Number

Professor Marino

Thursday January 10th, 2019

Artificial Intelligence (Short Title) 2

Artificial Intelligence:

(above is Full Title or just main title: if using a subtitle)

Past, Present and Future

(above is optional subtitle or no blank line)

The first paragraph of paper begins here. Continue to double-space—all parts of paper are double-spaced. Do not use blank lines between paragraphs. Left indent quotations greater than 40 words by 1 inch (do not right indent).

Continue . . .

Note: Title and possible subtitle, above, are centered.

In the header, add page numbering to the top right corner as required by APA: since APA requires page numbers preceded by words, the Header and Footer command will be used instead of the Page Numbers command. Click at beginning of page after title page. Click View, Header and Footer, & Align Right button. Reset Font & Font Size to match document. For APA, type your short title followed by about 5 spaces. Click Insert Page Number button (2nd from left) on floating Header and Footer toolbar and activate double spacing or press Enter (not both).

Form a hard page break at the end of the document. Add a double spaced “References” page with a 0.3” hanging indent: Press Ctrl+Enter & Center button; type the words References; press Enter; click Align Left button, Format, Paragraph, drop arrow under Special Indentation, hanging; By should already be set at 0.5, so for APA, click the down arrow to change the By to 0.3; click OK, & type a minimum of three references (one book, one periodical, and one Internet) without skipping lines between them. For each reference, at least one parenthetical documentation should be placed in the document. See an appropriate book, English Skills Lab handout, or Web page for the correct format for parenthetical documentations and for the citations on the references page. The format of the citations on the references page will vary depending on the type of reference (i.e. book, periodical, Internet). For an alternate means of creating a hanging indent, click Help, Microsoft Word Help; type indentation; click Indent paragraphs & Create hanging indent.

When borrowing an idea, paraphrase, or quotation, use parenthetical documentation, otherwise the researcher plagiarizes. To earn a position on a references page, cite the reference at least once.

Change left and right margins to 1 inch.
