Read Barry’s “The Ugly Truth About Beauty” and Tannen’s “Sex, Lies, and Conversation.
In your initial post, you should decide what the underlying thesis is for each essay. Then, compare the two essays in terms of content (what is the author talking about?), tone (what is the author’s voice like?) and who you believe gets closer to a universal truth about gender. The last point is a bit of an opinion; this should be a refreshing chance to “weigh in” after having to be so evidential and academic all semester. You’ll also notice that this assignment is a preview for the pre-writing assignment as we will be using essentially the same skills and structure to form our own essay ideas.
Rule 1 :You have to feedback their opinion with examples. (individually)
Rule 2: No plagiarism and citation
1."The Ugly Truth about Beauty" Thesis: While men tend to focus on how they look once in their life and stick with that opinion, women are constantly being fed cosmetics and advice because they believe they never look good enough and must constantly change to be beautiful.
"Sex, Lies, and Conversation" Thesis: Men and women communicate in two completely different ways, which can lead to a lack of understanding between them that would not be there if they simply tried to understand the other sides perception of a normal conversation.
Content: In both essays, the authors discuss the different ways that men and women perceive the world, as well as how they perceive the other gender. In the first essay, it is discussed how men perceive their look verses how women perceive their looks. While in the second, it is about how women perceive conversation verse of men do it.
Tone: Both essays use a very satirical tone that help reflect how ridiculous and easy to solve the misunderstanding between men and women are. When both essays talk about the more serious issues that come from these misunderstandings though, they switch to a serious tone. This contrast emphasizes both ideas and shows how important (or ridiculous) they are.
