Mexicans steal nothing from Americans
"So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans" is a poem written by Jimmy Santiago Baca. From the way it is written, we can see the author is aggressively attacking American social issue--Mexicans are coming and stealing Americans' jobs. I found it is persuasive since we are looking at the perspective of a Mexican, the victim, instead of a American socialist. The purpose of this poem is to convincing his audience, some white Americans.
The author uses lots of ironies to express his idea of Mexicans steal nothing from Americans. In fact, the name of collections of this poem is intriguing and ironic, Immigrants in Our Own Land. As we know, big portion of the land owned by American belonged to Mexican hundreds years ago. However, Mexicans are now treated as thieves by Americans on the land once belonged to them. Isn't not ironic? Similarly, author uses "So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans" as the title without question mark to satirize those who believe this nonsense.
By looking at line 1-10, we can feel the tone of this particular poem seems to be very bitter, and author uses some bad words to express his emotion. In line 4-5, Baca uses a metaphor to illustrate how Mexicans are look like in those American perspective: "And do you, gringo, take off your ring, drop your wallet into a blanket". "Gringo" is often used to describe people who is not native speaker with low social status. But in the poem, "gringo" is more likely to be a way to criticize those arrogant Americans. Likewise, "and as you're walking home with a whore"(line 9) gives me a sense that those Americans lost their jobs is because of idleness, instead of stolen by Mexicans. Moreover, in the line 12-16, "crawls", "turtle" and "rasping" reflects that those Americans only complains, not doing anything realistic.
We can feel the bitterness throughout the poem. In line 20-21, Baca shows his disappointment toward discrimination in our society by using "The rifles I hear sound in the night are white farmers shooting blacks and browns". What happens in the border is that white farmer will shoot Mexican who trespass on their land. But why would those people risk their lives trying to get into America? In the line 22-23, "ribs I see jutting out", "starving children" give me a understanding why they risk their lives, and that is why they would accept those low-paid jobs which is considered as stealing by some Americans. On the other hand, it is sarcastic that author implies some Americans "who've never been on a farm, don't know the look of a hoof or the smell of a woman's body bending all day long in fields"(line27-29). In author’s opinion, people who really steals those Americans jobs, or money in some way, are the CEOs and rich people on the top of the food chain. It is demonstrated in the line 30-32 that Mexicans and those Americans are the victims of this ruthless reality.
