OK, let’s look at what this assignment is asking for. You are going to write a 300 to 700 word short essay about using three different social media platforms to network within your career field.

First: this is a research assignment. Our textbook is not going to provide the directions for accomplishing this task. This guide will help you along the way.

So, before you can write this essay you need to use three different social media platforms to network within your career field.

What are social media platforms? These are the different social media sites we use such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Blogging sites (like wordpress, or your own weblog), and Pinterest. Read What Are Social Media? Beginning on page 52 of our textbook, and Social Networking Sites , on page 54.

If you are not currently using any of these sites, you will need to sign up and set up three of these sites to complete this assignment. These are free sites so it costs you nothing to open an account. If you do not want to be online, you can turn off these accounts after this assignment. However, using social media to network is in your best interest in this day and age of electronic media. LinkedIn, is especially a good site in my opinion for professional networking.

If you already have at least three of these social media accounts then you can use those accounts for this assignment.

The last line of the directions tell us what the paper is specifically to address.

You need to cite at least one source about how to present a professional profile on your social media sites. So do a search in our UOP Library like: “professional networking on social media platforms” and you will get pages and pages of results. You may also google search the topic. One site I suggest is:

This is an excellent site hosted by the University of Texas that lists dos and don’ts and tips for using social media to your benefit. It also provides a short introduction and tips for using six different social media sites for networking.

Now, using your research, set up three social media accounts for the purpose of professional networking – that is furthering or promoting yourself or your business through social media contacts. This will NOT be using your personal family Facebook page. Keep you professional networking accounts separate from your personal accounts. HINT: It might be a good idea to tell me why you should do that in your essay.

Use the advice for both setting up your account and for getting started networking with other professionals in your chosen career field.

AFTER you have set up three accounts and started to use them for networking, THEN write your short essay to describe the experience. Be sure to include:

1. Which sites you used to set up accounts

2. Provide the address to those accounts so I can look at them.

3. Provide an APA citation and reference for the article or articles you referred to in setting up your accounts for professional networking.

4. Give your impressions about this experience and whether you think it will be valuable to you.

For this assignment you can use informal and personal language. This is your account of what you did and what you think about the experience.
