ENG 115 – English Composition

(Prerequisite: Placement or ENG 090)

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course emphasizes the principles of writing coherent expository essays in various modes. The course reinforces and emphasizes the concept of writing as a process: developing and narrowing a topic, logically organizing ideas, drafting, and revising. The course introduces the process of using sources to support ideas and documentation of sources in accordance with citation styles.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

· Apply the writing process to brainstorm, research topics, create drafts, and revise and edit work.

· Develop a powerful and appropriate voice in written communication by setting the purpose and knowing the audience.

· Use the elements of storytelling to convey information, to construct meaning, and to create a connection with an audience.

WEEKLY COURSE SCHEDULE

The standard requirement for a 4.5 credit hour course is for students to spend 13.5 hours in weekly work. This includes preparation, activities, and evaluation regardless of delivery mode.

It takes practice to become an effective written communicator. In this course, you will practice writing effectively for different purposes.

Identify a topic from the list below. Each topic identifies an issue that you will investigate over the 11-week term. Throughout this course, you will discuss why you chose the topic, research and inform the reader about the topic, and then propose a way to address the issue.

Point of View: Use First Person POV, i.e. “I,” for the personal essay. Use Third Person POV, i.e. “he/she/they,” for the informative and stance essays. Do not use the Second Person POV, “you.”
