Mechanical Engineering 2 Group Design: EGA214(2017-2018)
Final Design Report Guidelines
The final report for the group design project should include all the detail of your design in order for it to be built. Any figures, tables and equations used in the report should be numbered and referred to in the text. The report should have page numbers and a table of contents at the beginning. As with all technical reports and theses, this design report should be written in third person (i.e. avoid using ‘I’ or ‘we’). The report must be word-processed using A4 page size with a line spacing of 1.5 lines and a page margin of 2.54mm all around (use this document as an example). The font size should be:
Heading text: 14pt Bold Calibri or Times New Roman
Body text: 11pt Calibri or Times New Roman
The report should contain a group section and individual sections for each part:
Group section
The group section must be no longer than 6 pages (not including cover sheet and contents) and must contain:
· Cover sheet (see template on Blackboard)
· Contents (with page numbers)
· Design specification and strategy including [2 pages]:
· Identification of core design requirements from user research and review of applicable regulations
· Identification of user needs
· Overall design [4 pages]:
· Show concept evolution
· Assembly drawings of the whole design [full page images]
· Details of assembly
· Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) analysis
Individual part sections
One section for each sub-assembly, written by the group member responsible for the part(s). The grade for this section will only apply to the group member responsible for it and each section has a page limit of 9 pages. The information required in this section is as follows (with an indication of amount of content required for each sub-section):
· Identify requirements for individual components [1 page].
· Design evolution showing [4 pages]:
· Concept evolution from physical and virtual prototyping
· Results from stress analysis (Solidworks Simulation)
· Show how finding from above demonstrates selection of final design (using an established design concept matrix).
· Engineering drawings [2 pages]
· Isometric view (full page) – full component (i.e. full chassis or attachment assembly)
· First or third angle projection - state which and include all dimensions (full page). If your design has multiple parts, then just include one key component.
· Materials and manufacturing specifications (includingenvironmental considerations - for your component(s)/sub-assembly [1 page].
· Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) - foreach individual’s design area [0.5 page].
· Reflection of design review using both physical and virtual prototyping [0.5 page].
Reports must be submitted on Blackboard by one member of the group by 6pm Friday 11th May 2018. This will be followed by a group oral exam (viva) during the week commencing 14th May 2018. Feedback will be provided at the end of the oral exam with grades released with exam results later.
