Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal

Directions: Develop an educational series proposal for your community using one of the following four topics:

1) Bioterrorism/Disaster

2) Environmental Issues

Planning Before Teaching:

Topic: Preventing the spread of the Influenza Virus.

Epidemiological Rationale for Topic:

I will be educating on the importance of the influenza vaccination to the residents, family members and employees of Community Care Center and the primary prevention about decreasing the spread of the influenza virus by becoming vaccinated. I will stress to the employees and residents the most since they can receive a flu vaccination here at the facility.

“Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of flu associated hospitalizations. It is recommended that everyone ages 6 month or older get a flu shot. Influenza can be spread easily with rapid transmission in crowded areas such as schools or nursing homes.” (CDC, 2017)

Nursing Diagnosis:

Knowledge Deficit, r/t Influenza Vaccination and decreasing/preventing the spread of Influenza Virus.

Readiness for Learning:

I must first identify any barriers to the ability to learn the information. Getting the individuals to comply maybe the difficult part for most time this population is set in there ways.

Learning Theory to Be Utilized:

The best way would be to have activities and have the audients (family, patients, and staff) to participate, while I guided them through the presentation. Also I will be introducing scenarios as part of the learning.

Goal:

To educate the families, caregivers, as well as the elderly population of the available resources as a support in the community.

Issues: The complications of transportation, social services support, chronic health problems, access to health services, and safe housing.

How Does This HP2020 Objective Relate to Alma Ata’s Health for All Global Initiatives?

The Healthy People 2020 objectives are similar to the Alma Ata’s Global Initiatives which includes prevention and control of endemic diseases and immunization against infectious diseases.

1. Patients and employees will be able to identify how the influenza virus is spread.

1. The influenza virus is spread by encountering an infected person. Becoming vaccinated is very essential in decreasing the spread of the influenza virus.

1. During the presentation I will play a video that entails how germs and the influenza virus is spread. I will also have scenarios that describe this as well.

2. Understanding signs and symptoms of the influenza virus and what to do if they start to occur. Also, how to prevent the further spread of the virus and complications it can cause.

2. If an employee has a fever or other flu-like symptoms, they are encouraged to stay home. Residents with these symptoms are recommended to stay in their rooms.

2. What if explanation and scenario will be done. Residents, families and employees will be broken down and given scenarios if the effected employee did or did not come to work. What will happen in each situation?

3. Understanding of the importance of becoming vaccinated against the influenza virus.

3. An annual flu vaccination is the first and best way to protect against influenza virus.

4. Educator will reassure the audience by clearing up any preconceived notions that they may have about the influenza vaccination.

Creativity:

When you bring people together in an interactive way this brings about creativity, mainly because every individual brings something different to the activity.

Planned Evaluation of Objectives (Outcome Evaluation):

1) There will be a review session at the end of the presentation in which the audience will tell presenter what they have learned from presentation. Time frame: within 15 minutes.

2) The number of documented influenza cases we get with this nursing facility over within the flu season. Time frame: three to six months (flu season)

3) The number of people who decide to become vaccinated with the influenza shot. Time frame: Within three to six months

4) Asking audience if they still have as any unanswered questions about the influenza vaccination. Time frame: 10 minutes

Planned Evaluation of Goal:

The goal of the presentation is to decrease the spread of influenza and to encourage residents and employees to become vaccinated. I will evaluate this goal by the number of residents and employees who become vaccinated during flu season also the amount of documented cases of the flu in this nursing home during flu season. I will measure these goals at the three and six month points.

Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher (Process Evaluation):

There will be an anonymous evaluation form given halfway during the presentation. So, when we break for refreshments, audience members will be asked to fill it out and turn it in before leaving the room. The form will have such questions like: Did the presentation meet your expectations? Was the information in the presentation useful to you?

Barriers:

· People not willing to be open minded about receiving new information.

· Patients and family members with communication difficulties i.e. HOH, decreased cognition.

· People going to the bathroom and missing essential topics.

· Elderly getting tired and fidgety

· People getting up going to the restroom and missing essential information.

Communication:

We will start the meeting with an ice breaker or introducing ourselves to one another, to initiate interaction between staff and audience members. I will practice the program before coming to facility so I plan appropriately for delays and silence. I will use eye contact for most of the teaching so I can understand body language of the audience. I will speak loud enough for the entire audience to hear me. I will start with a quick review of the teaching and let the audience know there will be break at 1300, with refreshments. During the presentation I will play a video of how the influenza virus is spread, demonstrate how the flu vaccination is administered and what is in the vaccination and do activities as well as group scenarios with the audience. There will be a question and answer for the listeners at the end of the program and a reflection section (ask them their thoughts about information presented) tailored for the audience.
