The cost of this package is in addition to the PBSC tuition paid by the student. The student will also be required to purchase miscellaneous groceries for the experiments. Go to the above website and use the USER ID to LOGIN: C000274 and the password: labpaq
THE LAB MANUAL IS INCLUDED IN THE COST OF THE ABOVE BOX of LAB MATERIALS FROM THE COMPANY. It arrives in the box on a CD.
Course Learning Outcomes: As a result of taking this course, the student will be able to: • Describe some of the sources of errors in scientific measurement. • Use proper technique using indicators to measure pH of various substances and explain the acidity or alkalinity and any impact of buffering. • Identify various biomolecules by performing skillful testing using various reagents. • Demonstrate skillful use of the microscope by; differentiating cells from various groups of organisms, identifying the stages of mitosis and examining diffusion and osmosis in a living cell. • Demonstrate correct technique in preparing a wet mount slide and staining. • Perform experiments that enable the student the ability to identify and compare factors that affect diffusion and osmosis. • Compare the effects of various factors upon enzyme activity. • Show through skillful experimentation the conditions required for Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis. • Demonstrate the separation of plant pigments through the use of chromatography. • Extract and analyze DNA, identify inheritance laws and analyze inheritance patterns of humans. Assignments : The assignments in this class are: 1. Conducting the lab experiments from the purchased kit. 2. Writing up the lab report and submitting to the instructor with digital photos of specific experiments (the lab reports will specify these). 3. Taking an online quiz for each lab experiment/week. 4. Taking a midterm and a final exam in the testing center on one of our campuses. Correct rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling should be followed in all written assignments. The lab reports can be dropped in the assignment drop box in the website, or attached to an e-mail.
Grading Scale and Policy: All exams are to be taken on or before the deadlines stated above. When a
student feels adequately prepared to take the exam, he/she reports to the testing center located on the campus selected by the student. If you are an out of town student, you may make arrangements with a college test center in your area instead of using Palm Beach State’s facilities. You should contact the instructor and send the information needed to set this up during the drop/add period, the first week of classes. Students must show a photo ID (driver's license) to take an exam and the fee is waived for Internet students. You must logon to Blackboard to take the midterm or final exam on the computer in the test center, so be sure to bring your logon information if you don't know it by heart. Hours of the testing center vary during the course of the semester. You MUST arrive at least TWO hours prior to closing time or they will not let you take the exam.
Call the test center you have chosen ahead of time to check the test center hours. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the test center’s closing time.

During final exam week, students may make up one missed lab report and quiz. Students who miss more than two lab reports and two quizzes will not qualify to complete the course and must withdraw. Make-up Exam Policy: The midterm and final exams MUST be taken on or before the dates listed above. Students are encouraged to create and then follow a study schedule around these dates so that they do not get behind. If a student misses either the midterm or the final exam they must withdraw themselves from the course. If they miss the final exam, they will receive an "F" for the entire course, since it is after the withdrawal date. Withdrawal Policy: IF YOU DO NOT LOGIN AND SEND THE REQUESTED INFORMATION BY E-MAIL WITHIN BLACKBOARD (AS PER THE ORIENTATION) BY THE DAY AFTER DROP/ADD ENDS YOU WILL BE WITHDRAWN FROM THE COURSE DURING THAT SECOND WEEK. Distance Learning Requirements Computer Systems Your computer system resources must be compatible with the Learning Management System (LMS) used to deliver/manage course content. System Check (analysis) is provided on the course login page at https://palmbeachstate.blackboard.com. Your computer needs to be configured per recommended settings. Failure to do so generally results in test submission and other participative action errors. These types of errors are generally not accepted as an excuse for missed submissions. SLC Computer Lab If students do not have access to a computer at home, the SLC Computer Lab at a Palm Beach State campus can be used to complete course assignments. Visit the SLC Computer Lab webpage at http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/slc for location and hours. Student Computer & Learning Management System Skills Students need to possess basic web-browsing skills and need to learn the functions of the Learning Management System (LMS). Online video tutorials are provided for all major LMS functions and can be accessed from the online classroom or directly at http://www.palmbeachstate.edu/elearning/resources Course Login
