Theda Perdue and Michael Green are the editors, not the authors, of the documents and should not be listed as the authors unless you are citing/quoting the secondary material (which is permissible as long as you keep it to a minimum). Papers shorter than 750 words will be penalized, but longer than 1,000 words is allowed (within reason). Keep in mind that citations, a works cited/bibliography, title page, images, and headers/footers do not count toward your word count. • We are asking for your opinion on some of these, but that does not give you license to use first person. Express your opinion without use first or second person (do not try to discuss “the author” in order to get around first person). • Make sure you clearly answer the questions posted and explicitly use the assigned primary sources. We want to see that you read/analyzed them, understood them, and used them to answer the question and formulate an argument. Use the primary sources as the heart of your argument. Papers with an overreliance on summary, background, or the narrative summaries in the book written by historians (rather than primary sources) cannot earn a grade higher than a C. • The book includes a brief history to give you the necessary context you need to understand the documents, which you need to read. HOWEVER, the purpose of this assignment is to see how well you can use the assigned primary sources to answer the question. You may use and quote the narrative summaries written by historians, but they should be a small part of your paper, and certainly not the majority.
