1. Your writing should be a reaction to what you read.
2. You should provide the title and author of the article at the beginning of the paragraph.
3. Additionally, you should clearly state your opinion about the issue and support your opinion with specific ideas and details from the passage.
The outline for this one paragraph is as follows:
• Introduction sentence that contains the following elements: Reading’s “title” Reading’s author first and last name Reading’s topic Author’s purpose Here is an example of an introduction sentence: Brad Andrews discusses the penny in “The Penny Debate” and whether minting it should continue or end.
• Topic Sentence contains your opinion on the topic and reasons supporting your opinion. Here are sample topic sentences: I believe the penny should continue to be minted because of reason A and reason B I believe minting the penny should stop because of reason A and B.
• Supporting Sentences elaborate on the topic sentence. Supporting sentences provide evidence or examples that validate your viewpoint. If you make a claim, you must support your claim with proof. Supporting sentences should relate to the topic sentence of the paragraph.
• Conclusion sentence wraps up the discussion and brings a sense of closure to the discussion.
