UNIT 7 WRITING ASSIGNMENT
1 Page Summary of “The Shape of Africa” by Jared Diamond
Use what we learned and practiced about how to write a good summary!
Use the 2 Handouts I gave you on Writing Summaries and the Summary PPT
Follow the techniques in the handouts. Be purposeful and intentional in your choices. Make sure your summary is comprehensive, concise, coherent, and independent!
Choose what to include and how to transform the key ideas thoughtfully. You should select the main ideas and most important support/details. Omit the rest.
Remember: Same Ideas But Written In Your Own Way - In Your Words, Order, and Style
If you want to include a part of the article and you can't figure out how to paraphrase it, you can use some "quotations" from the text. If you do, you MUST put the exact words you take without changing in "quotation marks".
Also, please REVISE and EDIT before you turn in your summary!
Be careful with your sentence construction. I expect to see correct simple, compound, and complex sentences now!
Check your grammar: You should be in the present tense. You need to check your writing for singular/plural noun agreement and subject/verb agreement. Check your articles (a, an, the).
Make sure you are making accurate word choices, especially with transitions and reporting verbs
First draft is a homework grade, and the final draft is the Unit 7 Writing Assignment.
