The English-Speaking World
You have not made the changes Charlotte asked for. Read her comments again and change your text in order for it to match the criteria.
As cited from Charlotte: "There are however other things that you need to work with as well:
- The text where you answer the questions should be one cohesive text, do not use bullet points or rubrics.
- You need to make in-text references to your sources. Have a look at the following links if you are unsure about this:
https://www.ub.umu.se/en/write/references/citing-references-harvard
- You need to make a proper list of your references at the end. Use the following link for help with this: https://www.umu.se/en/library/search-write-study/writing-references/harvard-writing-reference-list/
- You need to provide source criticism (Step 5: Present and discuss the sources). Emphasize the strengths and weaknesses of your sources. Make note of bias but remember that finding bias does not necessarily mean that the source cannot be used — it is, however, something to be aware of. If you say that you find a source reliable or that a source is biased/unbiased, you need to explain why. Present facts!
- You need to discuss the sources you discarded as well. Present the reason/s to why you did not choose to use them.
Have a look at the instructions again and make sure that you have followed all of them before handing in the assignment again".
You have one more chance to hand this in. Take it step by step!
Questions for Gun Laws in the US
1. What does the second amendment say?
2. What does the right to bear arms entail?
3. What are your thoughts on the topic?
Step 3. Choose sources
Choose at least two sources from the list, which you want to make use of in your text. Read through your chosen sources more carefully. Keep in mind that you are supposed to use your sources to answer the questions about your topic.
Step 4. Write a text
Address the questions provided in step 1 in a formal, cohesive text. Do not use bullet points! The text should be about 300-400 words long, but quotes do not count towards that number.
Support your reasoning by referring to your chosen sources. When you refer to a source, include the author’s surname and the year of publication. If no author is stated you can refer to the organization or company behind the source instead.
You can find more information on how to quote and refer to sources in the lesson on citation and references and on the following website:
https://www.ub.umu.se/en/write/references/citing-references-harvard
Step 5: Present and discuss the sources
Briefly describe the sources you have chosen. Please discuss each source separately. Present your reasons for choosing these sources. Discuss their strengths and weaknesses. Motivate briefly why you discarded the other sources. This part should be between 200-300 words long.
You can learn more about source criticism in the following video:
Step 6: Insert a list of references
Insert a list of references where you include the sources you have referred to in your text. You can find more information on how to list references in the lesson on citation and references and on the following website:
https://www.ub.umu.se/en/write/references/writing-references-harvard
Useful material
If you do not have a word processor with a built-in word counter, this website works just as well. Just copy your text and paste it in the text box to find out how many words it contains.

What does the second amendment say?
The second amendment states says in order to have the security of a free country, the people have the right to bear arms and they are also allowed to keep it until they do not offend the military. There is no other perspective under the amendment. According to the US Constitution, the legislature has been restricted by banning the possession of weapons.
According to researchers, they aim only to restrict Congress from a city having the right to self-defense when it comes to legislation.
It is said that this Theory is about collective rights and it is said that those who are citizens have no personal right to own weapons.
That is why the local, state and federal legislators have the power to control weapons without entailing constitutional rights.

What does the right to bear arms entail?
According to Patrick Henry's quote then, the right can be harmful intentions when it comes to the right to bear arms.
Military is only our end for security and nothing else. Then the video also points out self-defense. That is, if you have the right to use weapons then you should defend yourself from injury.

What are your thoughts on the topic?
Guns should be controlled in the sense that mentally sane people who are trained and have some sort of certification saying so should be the only ones allowed to buy commercially. Used for defensive purposes.
The gun laws in the US are dumb and conflicting in every state, it’s not even nation wide
I chose this source (https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/second_amendment) because I could get the answer I wanted in terms of how to look at the amendment with a different mindset. Which helped me capture an image of greater change? While other sites I could not connect with what I wanted
The second is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sW5CXTLXnHE ) because I think video can be credible and even there so explain through documentaries. There it made me understand ad is the purpose of this topic and there maybe can show more than reading the text
Second Homework
Literary Analysis - Part Literary analysis of the Road (2006) Cormar McCarthy’s
This assignment is good, but unfortunately, it does not follow the instructions.
In the first part about the main character you are supposed to write 300 words + use two quotes to explain how you think.
The second part also requires two quotes, and the third part requires one quote.
A quote is a chosen sentence (or more) from the text, followed by the page number. For example, when you talk about the main character, chose a quote from the book that shows that they do not want to contact other travelers or similar.
Keep up the good work and send me a message if you need any help!
Kind regards,
Mimmi
Overview
It is now time to write the literary analysis of the novel that you have read. Hopefully you have kept notes while reading to make it easier to complete this assignment.
Please note that this is not a book review. Your own opinion of the story is not relevant to the assignment itself and you should not retell the whole story - only describe the parts that are relevant to your analysis.
Do not forget to add information about the publisher, year of publication and number of pages. If you have read an online book, add a link/URL.
Instructions
The analysis should consist of three parts: Main Character, Main Theme and Language. In each part you need to use quotes from the novel to base your analysis on.
Important: Quotes do not count towards the specified number of words in each part.
Part one: Main character (ca 300 words + quotes)
For the first part of the text, you should analyze the main character. Some novels have more than one main character; in that case you should pick one. Keep in mind that there is a difference between an analysis and a description. You should not simply describe the character, but discuss why you think the character acts the way they do.
You should use two quotes which you think show important aspects of the character. This can be about the character's progression throughout the novel, certain traits (karaktärsdrag) that the character has, etc. Some questions you can ask yourself when reading:
- What is the main character like? How does the main character's personality impact the story?
- What is the main character's motivation?
- Does the main character change during the novel? If so, how and why?
- What role does the main character have in the story?
Part 2: Main Theme (ca 300 words + quotes)
The theme of a novel can be seen as the message the author wants to convey. Quite often the theme is not explicitly stated, so you have to read between the lines to figure out what the author wants to say. Keep in mind that the theme is not the same as the plot of the novel - for example, Harry Potter is about a teenage wizard, but that does not mean that "wizards" is a theme of the novel; one of the larger themes in Harry Potter would be "courage", because the novel discusses different kinds of courage, why it is important etc.
You should base your analysis on two quotes which support your interpretation of the novel. A novel usually has more than one theme, so for this analysis you should focus on what you consider to be the main theme. Some questions you can ask yourself when reading:
- What message do you think the author wanted to convey to the reader?
- Does the novel tell us something about the world or life in general? Is there a general lesson to be learned from the novel?
Part three: Language (ca 200 words + quotes)
Finally, you should discuss the language of the novel. Just like the first part, there is a difference between description and analysis; for example, if you think that the novel has simple language, you should then think about why the novel is written like that.
Use one quote to exemplify something you think is important or interesting about the language of the novel. This can be anything from the way dialogue is written to how descriptions are used, what kind of vocabulary is in the novel, or even the formatting of the novel (see the example text for a good example of this). Some questions to ask yourself when reading:
- How does the language of the novel impact the reading experience?
- Is there something characteristic or unique about the way the novel is written? If so, what?
- Why do you think the author wrote the novel like they did?
Quotes
If the quote is shorter than two lines use “…”, for example “When Anna saw the huge bear she was terrified”(page 32) If the quote is longer, make the text smaller and make an indentation:
When Anna saw the bear she was terrified. When she realised that it was moving towards her she didn’t know what to do. Should she run? No, she knew she wasn’t faster than a bear so that wouldn’t be of any use. Could she perhaps hit the bear on the nose and thereby surprise it? No, now she knew what to do, lie down in the moss and curl herself up as a ball and hope the bear would not harm her. (page 32)
Literary analysis of the Road (2006) Cormar McCarthy’s
Main character
The main character in Road was a man and boys. By the men he was the boy’s father who he went on the road with his son. The men trusted himself by believed god he will protect that boy, and he didn’t care if he must kill someone or at all cost. In the opposite to his son, these men was still sadly confusion others or their goals and even he was distrustful. This may be easy to understand.
On the way to help them he does not want to contact other travelers. But the boy hopes he will do it someday. The men were starting to get sicker and his illness led to manifesting in constant coughing and drooling. In the end that men died in a creek in a clearing in the woods.
The boy was the man son and the boy was born after the end of the world. Before the disaster, he knew nothing about the world. On the way, he crossed with his father who they believed were the good people and those responsible for the fire.
Main Theme
Themes in Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" are good and evil, which is perhaps best suited for these end of the world in this novel. The boy always sought confirmation from his father that they were the good and bad guys. But these people were also the ones who tried to harm them, for example they were thieves, murderers and cannibals.
On the side (116) according to the father, they were the person good because they work hard, they never gave up and the fire was a symbol of human endurance and hope. He tried to explain to his son. But as a good guy, men and boys are under fire internally, which means they have to work hard to live in all situations.
But in such a world, the conflicts between good and bad people do not end at all. According to the situation, they are good people even if the father took the son's life. But the man defends his son's evil by not considering violent acts. But this makes this choice more praiseworthy than the choice to kill or even cannibalize the survival of others.
Although the boy may pose a threat to his own survival or harm him, the boy does not know that he needs to be harmed under any circumstances. For example, the boy asks his father to save the thief and even helps him more. Because he was an accomplice in his father's punishment of the thief by taking off his clothes and shoes, the boy no longer knew any good people. He felt that his father's story of their heroic survival was untrue.
I think that the message that the author wants to convey is that there is a difference between good and bad. That one should not trust anyone if it comes to the end of the world and sometimes the good ones to try
Part three: Language
This is Cormac McCarthys' unique way of writing. And the content is related to this book. In the book's The Road, his writing style is not good, solemn and with that he has no grammar. For example, on page 28 and in the middle paragraph, there is a specific meaning in that paragraph.
This was a moment when the book reminds people of the beginning of disaster. Isolate it to emphasize its significance for history.
I think the author wrote this story because he wanted to show us the meaning of this story behind it. This assured us that they live in an environment where all forms of humanity, society and where civilizations are completely destroyed.
In the world of this book, cooking for cannibals and children with fire is a fact. The idea that people should gather to form small enclaves of hope and help is also unrealistic.

3 Homework
1. For this part you must choose one of the lectures shown below and present it to your teacher. Consider the following points:
Briefly summarize lecture (1-2 minutes).
Describe the invention presented in the lecture.
How has/will this invention presented in the lecture affect ...
... you on a personal level
... the society you live in
... the world
What do you think about the future of this invention?
Hans Rosling: The magic washing machine
Chris Urmson: How a driverless car sees the road
Wendy Freedman: This new telescope might show us the beginning of the universe
Jimmy Wales: The birth of Wikipedia
Maryn McKenna: What do we do when antibiotics don't work any more?
2. The document below is a list of quotes about inventions. Prepare to talk about at least 3 of them with your teacher. Some of the questions that could be discussed are:
What do you find interesting about this quote?
What do you think that the quote means?
Why do you think the person said it?
These are some of the questions the conversation should be based on, but you could of course bring up other aspects of the topic as well. You also have to be prepared to comment on your background research and any eventual sources you have used for this assignment. We will not ask you the questions above explicitly; instead you should bring them up as a natural part of the conversation. Remember that you are the one to start the conversation.
The conversation will last for approximately 10-20 minutes including the teacher’s questions and you have to think about the topic before the call so that you are prepared. Have a look at the checklist below while you are preparing for the assignment. If you want to you could use your own notes or perhaps a mind-map, but you are not allowed to read from a paper though. When you call your teacher you will find it easier if you start the conversation immediately in English.
We would also like to inform you that this is a compulsory (sw. obligatorisk) part of the English course. Not doing the assignment will generate “F”.
Some useful notes about speaking: Practise your pronunciation and accent by repeating phrases out loud while you are in the bath, shower, out walking, in the car, etc. If you are uncertain of how to pronounce a word there are many dictionaries online that have a feature that lets you listen to the words. Macmillan is one example. Create imaginary dialogues for yourself – imagine you are talking to someone you know but in English. Get together with a friend and agree that for 30 minutes you will only speak English together. Or why not persuade your whole family to join in and have an ‘English-speaking morning’ once a week?
