21702 Industrial Relations
Assessment Task 2: Case Study Essay (30%) The aim of this task is to analyse a contemporary industrial relations issue using relevant theory. Students will select a recent Australian case with implications for employment relations. Examples are:
Australian Cricketers – ACA (2017)
Chemist Warehouse – NUW (2019)
DP World – MUA (ongoing)
Port Kembla Coal – CFMEU (2016-2019)
Alcoa – AWU (2017-2019) Some cases are explicitly prohibited. These are:
Maruti Suzuki India’s wage settlement (2012)
Qantas’ labour dispute (2011)
The Australian Maritime Dispute (1998)
The above case studies are a starting point. You are welcome to choose a different case, but it is recommended that you discuss this with the Subject Coordinator beforehand.
Your Task
1. Provide a brief history and context of the case. You should outline the nature of the issues, show the significance of the case, and the outcome of the bargaining or predictions of possible outcomes.
2. Examine the views and positions of the different parties or actors in the case and how these relate to each other.
3. Outline any relevant legal, political, social, economic or technological aspects to the issue and how these factors shape the issues.
4. If you were a neutral consultant on the case, what solutions or policy recommendations would you put forward in order to safeguard both economic productivity and workers’ voice and welfare?
5. Utilise relevant theory and literature to explain the underlying causes of the issues and possible solutions.

Tips
The UTS Business Guide to Writing Assignments is a valuable and helpful document if you are unsure about your academic writing.
Make sure to use the APA Referencing Style in your essay.
Proof-read your work before submitting; use spell-checker and grammar checking.
Plagiarism is taken seriously at UTS. Make sure you understand what plagiarism means, the forms it can take, and how to avoid it - https://avoidingplagiarism.uts.edu.au/. Please speak with the Subject Coordinator if you are unsure.
Write in a formal manner suitable for scholarly work (third person), rather than an opinion piece or blog entry.
The word limit includes all words in the text from the start of the introduction to the end of the conclusion (including headings, quotations and in-text references), but excludes the final reference list.
Ensure your essay does not exceed the word limit. The purpose of a word limit is for students to learn to write clearly and concisely. This is a skill that takes time to learn and students are encouraged to allocate time before submitting their essay for improving their writing. Essays that are excessively over or under the word limit will automatically have marks deducted for failing to meet the requirements of the task.
Submission and Late Penalties
Late penalties will apply as set out in the subject outline. Assignments not received by the due date will be penalised at a rate of 10% of the base mark given per day (i.e. 3 marks deducted per day, including part days), unless an extension has been approved by the Subject Coordinator and supporting documentation has been provided. Essays not received after 5 days will automatically receive zero. Students wishing to apply for Special Consideration must apply well in advance of the due date using the procedure in the subject outline. Supporting documentation must be provided. Please note that extensions are considered and assessed by the Subject Coordinator and are not automatically granted.
