PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Project Introduction:
This project will help you apply all the concepts covered in this course for a given scenario. Vince Roberts
runs a vintage record shop in the University district. His shop sells 45s, LPs and old 76 RPM records. Most of
his stock is used. He buys used vinyl from customers or finds them at yard sales and discount stores. He
does sell some new albums that are released on vinyl. So far, he has kept most of his inventory either in his
head or in a spiral notebook he keeps behind the sale counter. But his inventory and his business have grown
to where that is far from sufficient.
In this project, you will review the information given in the scenario and based on that information, create the
following documents pertaining to the scenario:
Statement of Work (SOW)
Business requirements and rules
ERD
Security plan for the database
Course Objectives Tested:
1. Define a relational database.
2. Gather database requirements.
3. Define business rules for a database.
4. Create an entity design for a database using MS Visio.
8. Define the security context of a database and its users in MS SQL Server.

Title: Compile a Database
Project Details: Click here to review the Vince’s Vinyl database
scenario. Based on your review of the scenario, complete the following
tasks:
Create a Statement of Work (SOW). Include a brief history, a
statement of scope, objectives, and a preliminary timeline. You
should aim to complete this database in one month’s time. Click

here for SOW format.
Make a list of four to five issues with the current system in
Vince’s shop. Make a list that shows the database requirements
for each stakeholder involved in the database.
Create a set of four to five business rules for the database.
Review the requirements and rules that you have gathered after
reviewing Vince’s records scenario. Based on this review,
define your entities and attributes and the relations that exist
between them.
Download Visio on your local PC. This software title is available
for download from ITT Technical Institute's DreamSpark
software download site. For more information, please review the

Center.
Create a logical Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) using crow’s
feet notation in Visio. Review and normalize your ERD.
Evaluate all entities against the first three normal forms.
Create a security plan that includes authentication and
authorization and general policies and procedures. Use roles,
stored procedures, views, and other tools in your security plan.
Create a preliminary threat analysis for each user of the
database. Describe threats posed by each user to the proposed
database.
Make a preliminary disaster management plan. The plan does
not have to be full or elaborate, but should include some
policies about backup, access, and data recovery. It should
include some procedural lists for one or two of the tasks in the
stakeholders?
Did you build a
comprehensive list of valid
business rules?
Does your normalized
ERD contain all the
domain entities and all
attributes?
Did you create an
authentication and
authorization plan for each
user based on the user
needs of the database?
Did you create a threat
analysis plan identifying
potential threats from each
user?
Did you create a disaster
management plan for the
proposed database?
