The four concepts of metaparadigm addressed by the theory include:
The individual
The environment
Health
Nursing.
*
The Individual.
According to the theory, basic needs of individuals are components of health.
Individuals therefore need assistance to achieve health.
The mind and body of the individual are interrelated.
The theory views a patient as mult iple parts with biophysical needs rather than a
client.
According to Henderson’s nursing need theory, individuals are always in need of basic
needs some of which happen to be components of health. The individuals require help
to be independence and healthy or even get a peaceful health. The mind and body are
interrelated and inseparable; thus, the individual considers the psychological, spiritual,
biological, and sociological components. Moreover, the theory considers the patient
as the sum of parts with biophysical needs rather than a customer or client.
*
The Environment.
The theory defines the environment as the sett ing where the individual learns unique
living patterns.
Includes various influences and condit ions which affect life.
The theory highlights the impact of society on the individual.

the theory’s fourteen components.
Henderson’s nursing needs theory addresses the environment concept as a sett ing in
which unique living patterns are learned by the individual. The environment includes all
external influences and condit ions affect ing the development and life of the
individual. It also includes the family of the individual. The theory highlights the impact
of society to the individual and his/her family. Nursing care should provide condit ions
whereby the individual independently performs the theory’s fourteen components.
*
Health.
Health is defined on the basis of the ability of an individual to function independently
in reference to the theory’s fourteen components.
Nurses should stress health and prevention promotion as well as treatment of the
disease.
According to Henderson’s nursing need theory, heath is challenging due to factors

Nursing.
Nurses should do to others what they would personally do for themselves.
They should, however, make patients independent of them as soon as practicable.
Nurses should conduct a physician’s therapeutic plan.
Nurses, according to Henderson, should be independent and able to make
judgements independently so long as they don’t diagnose, make prognosis, or
prescribe treatment.
According to Henderson’s nursing need theory, it is stated that nurses should do to
others what they would personally do for themselves if they had knowledge, will, and
strength. The nurses should, however, make patients independent of them as soon
as practicable. Henderson also explain the primary role of nurses is to assess the
patients’ needs, assist them meet their health needs, and also provide an
environment to the patient whereby he/she can perform activit ies independently.
