RESPONSE 1:

This week’s forum post asks us to “Discuss three situations for uses of different operating system installs in a virtual environment while at the same time securing the operating system installation.”. There are many reasons to utilize more than one operating system or version of an operating system on one machine through a virtual environment. One example is one I have experience with as an electrical engineer. At my last company I was an electrical / component engineer. During this time, I had my Windows desktop set up with a virtual box running Linux. With this setup I was able to run tests on my circuit boards in the virtual box on one screen while I could still work on the component side of things (part numbers and BOM’s) at the same time without having to switch machines. During my research on this topic this week I found another reason that I found interesting, it was web designers doing the multiple operating systems to view their sites in browsers native to other operating systems. For example, they could see what their site looks like in the Microsoft Edge browser and something like Vivaldi which is a browser for Linux machines. Another example I can think of from my last company was several dual boot machines we had in our manufacturing test area because we had two different projects going on where one required testing through Windows and the other required the boards to be tested through Linux. So, depending on which node they were building they would be able to use the same machine but just boot Windows or Linux. Thanks for reading and take care.’

This week's second forum asks about three situations for uses of different operating systems installs in a virtual environment while simultaneously securing the operating system installation. The first situation that comes to mind is when trying to run different operating systems for different software. Older software or programs that only work with older operating systems still need to be secured. Multiple operating systems give computers the ability to run different programs at the same time. Being able to run multiple operating systems gives users the opportunity to test software in real time whether the reason be for learning purposes or otherwise. Any potential hiccups can be safely navigated in virtual machines and save users the headache of introducing malware into their hard drive. Virtual machines also eliminate the need for a large amount of equipment. If a software developer was unsure about their program's efficiency or effectiveness it could be tested on a computer in real time using a different operating system.
