DISCUSSION POST:

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) “is the national voice for academic nursing. AACN works to establish quality standards for nursing education; assists schools in implementing those standards; influences the nursing profession to improve health care; and promotes public support for professional nursing education, research, and practice”. (The American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2020)

AACN Competencies: Self-leadership

One of the competencies of AACN is self-leadership, which is the ability to "assess, manage and develop oneself to preserve and optimize relationships and add value to the outcomes of one's organization" (AACN essential competencies for governance leadership 2009).

Walden University Mission Statement

Walden's mission statement is to "provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can affect positive social change" (Walden University Student Handbook, 2020).

My academic goals

My academic goal is to obtain my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Walden University in preparation for my professional purposes. I will like to be an excellent leader to enable me to collaborate with other healthcare professionals whose mission is to create health awareness through health education and embark on projects that will promote population health and prevent diseases. The DNP degree will also enable me to accomplish "Essential VII: Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice which is the Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation's Health. To identify gaps in the healthcare of individuals, communities, and the populace by identifying their needs. Synthesize concepts, including psychosocial dimensions and cultural diversity, related to clinical prevention. Population health involves developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to address health promotion/disease prevention efforts. It will also improve health status/access patterns, and address gaps in care of individuals, and the general populations" (The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice, 2006, paras.15-16). I will embark mainly on clinical prevention because most individuals cannot afford to pay for the cost of healthcare. Essential VII also noted clinical prevention "as health promotion and risk reduction/illness prevention for individuals and families...DNP graduates engage in leadership to integrate and institutionalize evidence-based clinical prevention and population health services for individuals, aggregates, and populations." (p. 15).

2. Articulate a plan for incorporating social change into two of your professional and/or academic goals.

I will apply my learning into practice by promoting the living situation of my community of service. I will affect a positive social change in my community by collaborating with other healthcare professionals in providing health education, disease prevention, and health promotion services to remote areas in the eastern part of Nigeria.
