Discussion Jazz
"As we have discovered, jazz is a music that could only have developed in the United States. Only here did one find all the circumstances in place that lead to this great art form. However, as you will see, there are some brilliant jazz musicians that hail from around the world and may never have stepped foot on US soil or experienced the hardship of the people from whom this music sprung. How do you reconcile this seeming contradiction of great jazz emanating from musicians in say Europe or Asia?"

Lecture Narrative
In this unit the video narrator will walk you through the reading and writing processes. You will read “Rice for Thanksgiving” by Jocelyn Fong. This passage was originally part of the “This I Believe” series on NPR. It will encourage you to think about traditions and their connections to culture. This passage is personal in nature and should inspire you to connect in some way to the main idea and the details. The NROC program provides support features to assist you such as an audio version of the passage. Once the writing assignment is introduced, the video narrator will continue to assist you by guiding you step-by-step as you write. This unit includes engaging activities to help you learn and practice analyzing for structural elements that enable you to write summaries. Additionally, you will benefit from practice with run-ons, fragments, and vocabulary skills. The unit ends with a test.
