Essay Assignment About "Is Much Ado About Nothing " By Shakespeare
1. My opinion is that even though this play is a comedy (because no character dies at the end) it has alot of examples that show that it can be a tragedy.
2. This play is very similar to the plot of Romeo and Juliet (except Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy)
3. Lack of death prevents this play from being a tragedy but a tragedy that may become true soon enough

this book is NOT really a comedy -> Hero may not be satisfied with the marriage with Claudio after the misunderstandings in the long run -> Beatrice's questionable trust on love -> ordering Benedick to turn on his best friend Claudio -> examples of deception: The games and tricks played on people often have the best intentions to make people fall in love, to help someone get what they want, or to make someone realize their mistake. ex) Don John convinces Claudio that Don Pedro wants Hero for himself, Borachio meets 'Hero' (who is actually Margaret, pretending to be Hero) in Hero's bedroom window. -> Claudio in no way pays for his misguided and thoughtless actions, although it is hardly a tragic ending, as there is no death. the lack of death -> stops this play from being a tragedy. -> Hero is left in a swoon after Claudio¡¯s denunciation of her in front of the wedding guests -> Claudio rejects Hero in so vile a fashion Act IV in Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado are very similar: they involve a staged funeral. Whereas Juliet is faking her death at the bequest of Friar Lawrence, Hero is faking her death at the bequest of her father and uncle. -> In Much Ado, Claudio repents, agrees to marry Hero's "sister" and all is forgiven (the comedy side). Tragedy ends with funerals, comedy ends with weddings. The difference : 1.that more people are aware of Hero's staged death than are unaware. 2. Only Claudio, Benedick, and Don Pedro believe she is dead. 3. The Friar's plan in Much Ado is well-conceived. (used to trick the men into submission) Tragedy is avoided when Hero's "sister" is revealed to be really Hero. Claudio is reconciled with Leonato, Hero, and Benedick.
