· PAPER STRUCTURE TIPS
PAPER STRUCTURE TIPS
These tips are for the structure of your papers and their components. All essays for the class require the use of APA style, re: title page, running headers, page numbers, proper citations, etc.
USE THE SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE!
Make sure to meet the minimum word requirement if one is given (300 words per page. E.G. 1 page = 300 words,2 pages = 600 words, 3 pages = 900 words, etc.) The word count does NOT include the title page, references page, abstract, tables, and quotes.
Be sure to use the sociological perspective. The perspective considers external causes for behavior, attitudes, and social organization. All assignments for the class require the use and citation of the textbook.
PLEASE USE A TITLE PAGE WITH YOUR NAME ON IT.
Save all work in this form: your surname_Week#_AssignmentName, e.g. Jones_Wk1_HW1
Please meet the minimum word requirement. The title page, abstract, quotes, tables, and reference page do not count toward the minimum word requirements.
IF REQUIRED, apply one theoretical perspective to the assigned topic/issue if the assignment requires it. Please use the textbook and cite it in order to do this. Please include a title page, and titled sections - HEADINGS. The titled sections need to include abstract, introduction, ( discussion sections – topics), conclusion, bibliography/references, and topic areas.
Use page numbers.
Double-space the entire paper.
The paper must be grammatical.
ABSTRACT: The abstract must give a complete synopsis of the paper including findings.
INTRODUCTION: the introduction must CLEARLY state
1. The topic (what the paper is about)
2. The intent (what the essay will do)
3. The method (how the intent will be accomplished)
4. what the expected findings are (what the reader will to come to understand).
DISCUSSION SECTIONS: For each titled section (except the bibliography) please use an introductory sentence where the reader is told what will be done in that section. Each titled section should have a brief conclusion where the section is reviewed - what was done in that section and a transition sentence where the reader is told what is coming next in the next section.
CONCLUSION: The conclusion must:
1. Summarize ALL the major points
2. Make summary comments.
This organization is standard in all written work. It makes a paper clear and easy to read, it helps with organization, and it insures that the paper stays focused on what is required. There is redundancy in some sections. For example, the abstract (there are no abstracts required for this class), introduction, and conclusion repeat information. This is standard in research writing.
Please cite your sources in-text - in the discussion - where material from those sources is referenced. Full citations of all sources in a reference section/ bibliography are required. Note: In-text citations allow the reader to find the relevant full citation in the bibliography. Full citations allow the reader to find the exact source used.
Please do not use Wikipedia,Answers.com, Info.com or any of the online sources that are written and edited by the general public. These sources are not reliable since anyone with internet access can edit any entry and/or add an entry. We only use these sources casually.
Please keep quoted material to 5% of your paper. Do not exceed 5%.
