Short Paper No. 1: Formalist Analysis of a Narrative
LENGTH:
3 pages (Times New Roman 12-point type)
FORMAT:
MLA style throughout
Times New Roman 12-point type
A typical literary analysis thesis will take the basic form of this general template: "The text does x by means y." Thus your thesis might say something like "'The Cask of Amontillado' establishes a dark tone by means of sound imagery," or "Poe's narrator emphasizes his heightened perception by repeating adverbs and adjectives." The body of the paper should then support this thesis with analysis of examples from Poe's text, explaining how the examples support the thesis. For the first sample thesis above, for instance, your paper would need to establish at least three points: a) the text uses sound imagery, b) the text has a dark tone, and c) a causes b. The essay should finally come to a conclusion that does more than simply restate the thesis.
