Industrial Engineering Project: Expanding On Data Collection Report.
We have a mid report already written which i attached. I am responsible for writing about the data collection which is part where i need to write everything regarding the data that was collected for the project. I have written a couple of pages on the section already. I need help expanding the Data Collection section of the mid report attached. I need for that section to have at least 6 to 7 more pages. I also attached a copy of the syllabus to help you understand the purpose of the project and the report and I also highlighted the parts regarding data collection. I will also attach a small timestudy that was done that as used to analyze the time it take to do certain tasks and should be mentioned on the data collection section. If you have any questions let me know. Thank you.
IEN 494--SENIOR PROJECT
Fall 2014
Catalog Description: Integration of Industrial Engineering principles and techniques in the design and improvement of production and service systems. Course includes preparation of project proposal, data collection, analysis, writing a final report and formal presentations.
Textbook: Handbook of Industrial Engineering, 2nd Edition
Edited by Gavriel Salvendy, Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 1992
Coordinator: Shihab S. Asfour, Ph.D., Professor and Chairman
Department of Industrial Engineering
Goals: To present a meaningful design experience in the form of a project integrating all aspects of the I.E. curriculum.
Prerequisites by Topic: Methods Analysis, Applied Probability and Statistics, Simulation, and Senior Standing
Topics: 1. Project Organization
2. Project Selection
3. Data Collection
4. Data Analysis
5. Results and Conclusions
6. Professional Presentation and Defense of Project
Additionally, each student will present in class certain chapters from the Handbook in the class. This will serve as a review of the important concepts studied in the core undergraduate Industrial Engineering courses.
Senior Project Requirements: The purpose of the Senior Design project (3 or less people per team) is to provide a culminating design experience to the Bachelor of Science Industrial Engineering. Students are expected to use a structured approach to project management in a team setting and to apply the concepts of their industrial engineering studies. This is your final Industrial Engineering Project where design principles will be applied. The project is to be done at a company and/or department within the University where you will need to identify a process or need that requires to improvement, update or change due to a variety of reasons. You are required to provide a minimum of 150 hours per person to complete the project. In addition, you must use a variety of IE tools (a minimum of 3) from your studies. These tools can be drawn from the variety of IE classes that you have taken in your studies.
The requirements/required elements for the project are as follows:
· Must be a design project.
· Must be of a real world situation.
· Minimum of 150 hours to be completed on location. A weekly time log is to be kept per person and submitted on a weekly basis along with the progress report. The final time log is to be included in final project report in the appendix. (see attached format)
· A Project Proposal must be completed with a project sponsors approval. (in addition to Dr. Asfour)
· A Project Plan should be created and used to aid you in keeping on time and with scope. (Microsoft Project)
· A flow chart/process map in Visio must be done. Any other applicable charts should also be completed.
· Data collection is required and could include time studies, financial data, quality data and any applicable operational data. (Excel, Minitab, etc..)
· A detail data analysis of the data using the appropriate tools must be completed. You should use appropriate software where applicable. (OR, Simulation, layout, time standards, Six Sigma, etc…)
· Redesigned process and any developed items (Decision Support System, new layot, quality system, etc…) need to be completed
· Recommendations and improvements must be included which may also require revised process maps and charts.
· A final power point presentation; team presentation and final project report is required.
Project Proposal: A one page proposal will need to be submitted (due date on the syllabus) which includes the project objectives, the organization, and the desired deliverables. It also includes the business problem or need at hand. It describes the deliverables and what is included or not included in the project. A Project Proposal format will be provided in class and the proposal must be typed.
Data Collection Plan: This document outlines the frequency of the data collection for the project and it also provides the template that will be used to collect the data.
Project Progress Reports and Weekly Time logs – These should be a 1-2 page summaries of what has been accomplished on the project, what should have been accomplished and what is left to do . You should also identify potential risks at this point in the project. A template will be provided for the status reports. All reports are to be typed. These are to be submitted on a weekly basis on Sundays via email to sasfour@miami.edu .
Team Presentation – Each team will have 15 minutes to present their projects. A Power Point presentation is required and a copy of it should be included with the final report. The presentation should include elements of the Project proposal, the project timeline, Current State, Data Collection, Analysis, Future State and Recommendations. Your project sponsor must be present at the final presentations. This is not an option.
Final Report: The final report should be written in such a way that your project sponsor will understand. Your audience is the IE faculty, your project sponsor, and myself, Dr. Asfour. Your intent is to describe what were the original objectives, the process observed, any and all data collection, and your conclusions. Each chart, graph, and table should be clearly labeled. When using technical and statistical terms ensure that your audience understands them if not you must describe them. You should refer to the real process when creating the titles and labels.
The report is to be typed in single space. It should look professional. Remember, you must look credible to your audience and sloppy reports make you lose credibility. The outline should be as follows:
Cover page: Project Title, Your Names, Student IDs, Date.
Table of Contents:
Executive Summary: 1 – 2 page summary of project.
Introduction: A summary of the project proposal and the objectives of the project.
Current State: Define the current process and state of operations. This should include a description of the process and appropriate charts including a process map. One chart of the process is not sufficient. You should use at least two of the charts described throughout the semester. Part of describing the current state is to explain the existing issues, problems, and or areas of concern.
Data Collection: In this section, you will have a description of the data collection effort. You need to describe how the data was collected, the data collection tool that was used and, where/when the data was collected.
Analysis: The analysis section of the report is where you analyze the charts and the process for problem areas and changes that should be considered. In addition, you need to analyze the data that you have collected to determine standard times for the processes. You should include references to each one of the charts, graphs, etc... If you have placed something in the appendix, then it should be referenced in the body of the report. Every data set should be referred to in the explanation. A chart with the number is not sufficient. You need to explain the numbers, the graphics, and what they represent. In addition, you need to describe the tools used and what they were used for.
Proposed Future State and Recommendations: In this section of the report, you need to present your findings, recommendations and what the future operations should look like. If you need to do a new process map of the proposed process, it should be included. If you can quantify the time savings or cost savings, it should be included also.

Mid-Term Project Reports and Presentations – These reports and presentations are designed to provide feedback on your project to date. They should be in the same format as the final project and presentation but only providing was has been accomplished so far. At a minimum you should have you Introduction, Current State Analysis, Data Collection efforts, and Analysis. Proposed future state and recommendations should be presented in to the extent that they are completed. The presentation is to be kept to 10 minutes.
