At this stage in your life, there are some who say that you cannot possibly know anything of true love. Yet, there are others who say that love is most purely expressed in the idealism of youth. What is your view of love? Can a teenager truly know what love is? Or are they right who say that an understanding of love comes only with maturity? State your position and use personal experience or examples from other works of literature that you have read. 4-Lesson Assignment
The poem by Jack Gilbert, "Failing and Flying," is written in free verse. It also contains several instances of "enjambment." This is a literary term for the idea that when you are reading a poem and you get to the end of a line of poetry, you do not pause if there is no punctuation. Go back to the poem and see the instances of this in lines 3 - 7:
or the marriage fails and people say
they knew it was a mistake, that everybody
said it would never work. That she was
old enough to know better. But anything
worth doing is worth doing badly.
How does the poet's use of this technique and his choice to write in free verse affect the tone of the poem? Remember, the tone is the way the author feels about the subject or the audience of the poem.
