Hey students....I really want to see everyone do very well on their final paper....Please recognize that the Case Study is a major undertaking, and as such it should reflect in-depth analysis and a very professional delivery of your information. Here are some key pointers that will help you attain the best product....and ultimately the best score for your work......
1. There is an 8 page minimum...and that means 8 FULL pages...and this does not include the title page or the References page(s). A page that is not full does not count...so if your 8th page (which should be page 9) has anything less than a full page, consider your paper 7 pages in length.
2. You paper MUST be formatted properly....and that means APA 7th edition guidelines must be followed. I have repeatedly noted problems with spacing, in-text citations, and References page entry errors, and while some of you have corrected those, most have not. A paper that does not look professional will not be given much consideration in the professional world....
3. "Summarize" means precisely what the term states...and it is the summary of the key elements of the case. Remember that this is an accounting course, so the expectation is that features of the case they are particularly associated with any of the accounting process must be discussed. Please note that this element alone is worth 8 points of the 30 possible…that is approximately 27% of the score on this single element. I would STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you have to a heading in your paper: Summary of the Case…this section should be approximately 3 pages in length.
4. Please use headings....just as I explained in item 3 in the preceding paragraph.....this helps keep you focused, improves the clarity of the document, and keeps you from forgetting to address an element in the assignment. Recommended heading for you papers (and a rough approximation as to the average length of each section…your sections may be longer or shorter than these averages, but remember that the minimum page count is 8, and this DOES NOT include the title page OR the References page):
Introduction (1-2 paragraphs)
Summary of the Case (3 pages)
Accounting Practices Used to Define and Solve Collection Problems (2 pages)
Alternative Solution (1-1.5 pages…be sure to use 3-5 scholarly sources in this section)
Opinion of Approach (1 page - remember, do NOT use first person in your writing here)
Conclusion (1-2 paragraphs)
5. Review the grading rubric...the Case Study will be graded directly by the rubric.
6. I will be examining your work using Turnitin... please make sure you have not plagiarized. Any plagiarism noted will result in reporting to the university for investigation. PLEASE make sure that you avoid this serious academic issue. If your paper has a similarity Score of >20%, it is highly suspect and will undergo closer scrutiny.
7. Your submission MUST be in Word (R) format.
8. Finally, here are reminders of the common issues I continue to note in written assignments:
a. Many students continue to have the spacing set incorrectly. The spacing should be set to Double-Space, with 0-pt BEFORE and 0-pt AFTER settings. If you are not sure how to do this, please email me and also include which version of Word you are using…i.e. Word 2010, Word 2013, etc. This spacing guideline applies to the ENTIRE document, and that includes the Title page and the References page(s).
b. Avoid writing in first person (do not use I / we).
c. Citations for a quotation should include the page number on which the quotation begins in the original source.
d. Block quotation formatting is used for quotes that are > 39 words in length
e. Do not overuse quotations..... a paper this short should have no more than 1-2 quotes...use paraphrasing instead, but remember that even when paraphrasing, you MUST cite the source.
f. Your References section should not have any source listed that was not cited in your paper.....remember, also, if you use a source you MUST cite it.....
I look forward to reading your papers!
