Every Man
The amorality play Every Man was written in the 15th century similar to other Christian plays, it takes one through what every day man needs to do in their path to attain salvation. It shows of the various qualities that man encounters in their life and what they take heed to while on earth. It is on his path that man tries to get other characters which are symbolical; of traits such as beauty, discretion, strength, material gains that man worships here on earth but what really counts is one good deeds here on earth as the Lord will judge one according to their good deeds that they engaged on earth. It is in this path that Everyman realizes what counts in living a Christian fulfilled life and not all other things are as important since they live them back here on earth.
One of the most symbolic statements in the play is ‘Here begins a treatise how the high Father of Heaven sends Death to summon every creature to come and give account of their lives in this world, and is in the manner of a moral play.’ This statement is symbolical of God sending his messenger death to call upon them to heaven and give account of their lives based on their actions. The lord feels taken for granted, despite Him doing so much for man, the Everyman feels he is not ready for this and tries to bribe death, but refuses but allows him to be accompanied by others who shall lobby for Everyman good virtues. This is similar to the vices in the world that people engage in such as paying of bribes. The companions Everyman chooses are cousins representing family and Fellowship symbolical of friends but they all abandon him on his journey all giving excuses. It represents that Everyman will be judged individually since even’ Cousins’ have their own Paths to follow.
Everyman then decides to ask Goods to accompany him since he has spent so much time to acquire this possessions and material but they refuse claiming he had failed to share goods with the needy, hence ‘Goods ‘ was making God’s judgment on him more severe. Finally he asks ‘Good Deeds’ to accompany him she agrees to accompany him though she is very weak since Everyman paid little attention to her during his time on earth, knowledge accompanies Everyman this symbolical of the ability to tell good and evil. ‘Now we go together lovingly, To Confession, that cleansing river’ Everyman is given an opportunity to confess their sins before God and they receive forgiveness. It is until ones sins are forgiven that Good Deeds become strong enough to accompany Everyman throughout their journey. Other traits such as beauty, strength that are acquired they however die off as one grows older and knowledge fades away since it leaves his body soon as he dies. It is after death that everyman is accompanied by death and Good Deeds to heaven where they are welcomed by Angels awaiting judgment. The play goes to teach the audience a moral that it is ones Good Deeds that will count here on earth and will count even after they died.
